Poughkeepsie, NY – The No. 18-ranked Wagner women's water polo team completed their time in the Courtney Fisher Invitational with two wins over Metro Atlantic Athletic Association (MAAC) foes to set their overall record at 11-5. They began the day with a tight 12-10 victory over the No. 24 Marist Red Foxes before their offense erupted for a 21-8 win over the La Salle Explorers.

The Seahawks offense outlasted the Red Foxes, scoring five goals in the fourth quarter to earn a 12-10 victory over Marist in the first matchup of the Courtney Fisher Invitational.
After a Marist exclusion on the first possession,
Savannah Henshaw opened the scoring with a man-up goal to put the Seahawks up 1-0. The Red Foxes answered back with a man-up goal of their own to equal the score at 1-1, before two scores from
Sofia Diaz Alvarez and a single score from
Malia Josephson gave the Green & White a 4-1 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first period.
Marist responded with two scores to cut the lead to one, but freshman
Valeria Rojas recorded her first goal of the day with only 28 seconds remaining to end the period with Wagner leading 5-3.
In the second period,
Abbey Simshauser extended the Green & White lead to 6-3 with her first goal of the day, but two Marist scores sent the teams into the halftime break with Wagner leading by only a single goal, 6-5.
After the Red Foxes scored to open the second half, Diaz Alvarez completed her hat trick to put the Seahawks back in front, 7-6. However, Marist would find the back of the cage one more time before the end of the third period to send the teams into the final stanza knotted up at 7-7.
Marist struck first in the final eight minutes, taking their first lead of the match, 8-7, with 7:21 remaining in the game. However, the Green & White offense would respond quickly as
Jacqui Sjogren, Rojas, and Simshauser each recorded a score to get the Seahawks back in front, 10-8, with just over four minutes left to play.
After the Red Foxes cut the lead to one, Diaz Alvarez and Henshaw both scored to close the door on a potential Marist comeback. A last minute score from the Red Foxes would set the final score at 12-10, as the Seahawks left the pool with their second conference victory.
No. 18 Wagner 21, La Salle 8: Game Sheet
After a hard fought win over the Red Foxes, the Green & White offense picked right up where they left off in the final quarter, tallying 21 goals and securing an undefeated day in Poughkeepsie, defeating the La Salle Explorers, 21-8.
The Explorers struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Green & White would outpace La Salle 11-3 in the first sixteen minutes.
Malia Josephson led the way with five scores, followed by three goals by
Skye Nankervis, while
Sofia Diaz Alvarez,
Abbey Simshauser, and
Kristen Saczynski would each add a single goal apiece.
The Seahawk offense continued their hot streak to begin the second half, outscoring La Salle 5-1 in the third period.
Franciska Miló-Sidló led Wagner with two scores, while
Jacqui Sjogren,
Erin Weisert, and Josephson each added a single goal apiece.
In the final eight minutes, the Explorers would stay more evenly paced with the Seahawks, as they scored four goals to Wagner's five. Miló-Sidló added two more in the final stanza to lead the Green & White, while Weisert added her second of the day and
Valeria Rojas and
Krystal Quintanilla both notched their first of the game as Wagner left the pool with a 21-8 victory.

The Seahawks will be back in action on March 7 after a weekend off, travelling to Cambridge, MA to compete in the Harvard Invitational. They will compete in a total of three games, beginning with a double header on Saturday, March 7 against Connecticut College at 9:15 am, followed by Cal State East Bay at 4:45 pm. They will conclude the weekend on Sunday with their second of three season meetings with No. 23 Bucknell at 2:15 pm.
