The Wagner College men's indoor track & field team won its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Track and Field title Saturday after scoring 102 points on day two in finishing atop of the ten-team field with a final score of 143.50. 
 

The Seahawks entered the final day 1.5 points ahead of eventual runner-ups, Mount St. Mary's, who finished with 115 points. Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the top-three schools with 96 points. 
 

Central Connecticut (88), LIU (78), Saint Francis U (34.5), Merrimack (32), Bryant (31), Sacred Heart (30) and St. Francis Brooklyn (12) completed the two-day championship event, which was held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. 

Trausti Thorstein was named NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) after two first-place finishes in the mile (4:10.31) and the 3000m on Friday, when he crossed the finish line at 8:19.73. The Reykjavik, Iceland native also competed in today's 5000m final en route to a fifth-place finish (14:59.50). 
 


Noel Del Cerro earned his third-straight pole vault title after matching the conference record he set back in 2018, as he cleared 4.90m.

 

In addition to Thorstein and Del Cerro, the DMR squad of Nick Velez, Mahmoud Abdalla, Jonathan Besselink and Ben Finnigan clinched the Seahawks first league crown with a first-place time of 10:09.96.

 

The Seahawks also collected four bronze medals en route to the team title as T
homas Corel finished the 500m dash with a time of 1:03.73. Robert Guidicipietro crossed the finish line in 14:50.58 in the 3000m and Finnigan joined Thorstein on the podium in the mile after recording a time of 4:11.65. Additionally, Corey Durden earned a bronze medal in the shot put as he reached 15.49m in his final throw of the afternoon.

Rounding out the medal performances for the Seahawks was the 4x400 team, comprised of Joshua Cadet, Cyril Babcanec, William Cuthbertson and Corel as they closed the meet with a new school-record of 3:17.33 in taking third. 


Other notable Wagner performances came from the duo of Nick Velez (1:54.74) and Cuthbertson (1:56.22) as they added to the Seahawks' point total in the 800m after a fourth and fifth-place showing, respectively. Justice Stewart concluded the 60m hurdles in fourth while Josiah Cadet placed sixth overall in the 400m with a time of 49.43. 


Wagner is scheduled to compete in the Fast Track Last Chance Invite on Friday, February 28 before those Seahawks that have qualified will head out to the IC4A Indoor Track & Field.  Championships on March 7-8 in Boston, MA.
