Game Notes Wagner

Loretto, PA – The Wagner College men's basketball team will take the road for the annual Western Pennsylvania trip, starting with a matchup at Saint Francis U on Thursday night. The Seahawks are even at 1-1 in conference play this season following a victory at Mount St. Mary's and a loss against Sacred Heart this past Saturday.

Successful Start

Graduate student Curtis Cobb III led all scorers with 25 points to guide the Wagner College men's basketball team to a convincing 66-47 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams last Thursday. After taking a 31-23 lead into the halftime locker room, the Seahawks closed out the contest with a 9-0 run on a three by junior Chase Freeman and two buckets by Cobb, which gave Wagner a 60-41 lead with just 4:10 remaining.

Iron Man

Freeman was on the court for all 40 minutes of Saturday's contest against Sacred Heart. The junior point guard currently leads the Northeast Conference (NEC) with an average of 35.80 minutes per game. Freeman has also shown tremendous efficiency while on the court, as his assist/turnover ration of 2.2 is currently second in the league.

Mixing It Up

Head Coach Bashir Mason has used seven different starting lineups throughout the season and ten Seahawks have seen at least one start this year. While Mason used the same starting five in both conference games thus far, it was the first time those five players started together since the season opener at Seton Hall.

Cobb Filling Up The Stat Sheet

Cobb recorded his third 25+ point scoring effort of the year last Thursday, finishing with 25 in the Seahawks' 66-47 win over the Mount. He hit 5-8 from three-point territory and snared six boards. For the season, Cobb is third in the NEC with 17.5 points per game, but also leads the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 24 of 27(.889) attempts from the charity stripe so far this year.

Road Success

The Seahawks and Red Flash split the season series last year, but Wagner was able to come away victorious at DeGol Arena during the 2018-2019 campaign. Senior guard Elijah Davis matched his career high with 20 points, which included four clutch free throws in the final 21 seconds, redshirt senior guard Romone Saunders added 18, and Wagner rode a 62 percent second-half shooting effort in earning an 83-79 win.

Scouting The Red Flash

Saint Francis U enters the second week of conference play with am 8-5 overall record and 1-1 mark in NEC play. The Red Flash opened the 2020 calendar year with a 67-63 loss at Bryant before earning a 93-69 victory over Central Connecticut on Saturday.

Next up for Wagner

Following Thursday's contest, the Seahawks will continue their Pennsylvania road trip on Saturday with a 1 pm matchup at Robert Morris.
