Game Notes Wagner

Staten Island, NY – Fresh off a convincing 66-47 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener, the Wagner College men's basketball team returns to the Spiro Sports Center to take on Sacred Heart on Saturday at 7 pm in a contest that will be televised on SNY.

Signature Defense On Display
Against the Mountaineers, head coach Bashir Mason's signature defense was on full display. The Seahawks held the Mount to just 24% (12-50) shooting on the night, and a physical performance on offense led to a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.

2020 Vision
Graduate student Curtis Cobb III started the year 2020 in style, scoring a game-high 25 points to lead the Seahawks to a win over Mount St. Mary's. Cobb's strong performance included five threes as Wagner converted on nine baskets from deep, holding the Mount to just 3-20 from long range.

Thursday's performance marked Cobb's third 20-point performance of the season. Over the last three games, Cobb is averaging 20.67 points per game and will look to continue his recent surge on Saturday.

Three In A Row
Thursday's victory over Mount St. Mary's marked the third straight victory for the Seahawks in their conference opener. With the addition of Merrimack to the NEC, this year's regular season conference slate will feature 18 games in a two-month stretch, with the NEC tournament scheduled for March 4-10.

Wagner head coach Bashir Mason has led the Seahawks to a berth in the NEC Tournament in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the Seahawk program. As a program, the Green & White have nine consecutive NEC Tournament appearances.

Scouting The Pioneers
Sacred Heart enters the weekend with a 7-7 overall record and 0-1 conference mark. The Pioneers dropped their NEC opener to Merrimack 65-57 at home on Thursday evening and have lost three of their last four matchups. Four Pioneers average double digits per game, led by E.J. Anosike's 15.3 points per game.

Early Success
Last year's meeting between the Seahawks and Pioneers at the Spiro Sports Center featured a hot start for the Green and White. Wagner jumped out to a 12-2 start en route to a 46-32 halftime lead, and then withstood a late Sacred Heart rally in hanging on for a hard-fought 76-73 win. The two teams split the season series, with the Pioneers earning the win in the second meeting in Connecticut.

Alumni Day Set For January 18
The Seahawks' annual Basketball Alumni Day event will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2020, when Wagner hosts St. Francis Brooklyn for a doubleheader at the Spiro Sports Center.

Next Up For Wagner
Following Saturday's game, the Seahawks will take the road to Western Pennsylvania to take on Saint Francis U on Thursday night, before traveling to Robert Morris on Saturday, January 11.
