Providence, RI – The Wagner men's water polo team opened the 2019 season by suffering a pair of losses at the Bruno Classic on Saturday, dropping a hard-fought 13-10 double overtime decision to No. 20 Brown in the opener, before falling by a 17-11 count to MIT in the afternoon finale.
The Seahawks will wrap up the two-day Bruno Classic on Sunday with a pair of matchups, going up against St. Francis-Brooklyn at 8:30 am and No. 16 California-Baptist at 11:30 am.
No. 20 Brown 13, Wagner 10
The Green & White, who battled the Bears throughout, trailed by one at the end of the opening quarter, 2-1. Senior captain, Lachlan Trabinger supplied the early offense for the Green & White, notching his first goal of the season in the opening quarter.
Freshman Olivér Fodor added a major spark in the second quarter, recording his first and second goals of his career in the period. Junior transfer Nicolas Butelet and Lachlan Trabinger each tallied a goal, helping Wagner to end the first half tied at 5-5.
Senior captain Matthew Miller began the third quarter with two goals to get Wagner out to a 7-5 lead. Brown would eventually knot it up at 7-7 before the end of the stanza.
In the final quarter, Fodor would complete his first hat-trick as a Seahawk and,following a goal with only 11 seconds remaining in the game by Matthew Miller, the Green & White were up 9-8. However, Brown would respond quickly with a tying goal with only three seconds left in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
In overtime, Brown struck first before freshman Shaked Yacoby tied it up at nine apiece. After the Hod Hasharon, Israel native's goal, it was all Brown as Bears scored four goals, resulting in an eventual 13-10 victory over Wagner.
MIT 18, Wagner 11
After a tough loss in their morning match, the Seahawks looked to rebound against MIT. Right out of the gates, Olivér Fodor put Wagner in front with his fourth and fifth goals of the season. A third goal by Shaked Yacoby would get the Green & White to three goals in the first quarter, leaving them trailing 4-3 going into the second.
For the rest of the game, the Seahawks would be chasing after the Engineers. In the third period they would get the score as close as 10-9 but could never fully overcome the deficit.
Throughout the game, Fodor would score a total of four goals, besting his hat trick from the earlier game and bringing his total for the season to a team leading seven. Shaked Yacoby and Jordi Alonso bothed add two goals each, while captain Lachlan Trabinger and Vuk Bulajic notched one each.
The Seahawks will be back in the pool tomorrow morning going up against St. Francis Brooklyn at 8:30 am and again at 11:30 am facing off against No. 16 California-Baptist.
