Men’s Water Polo Opens 2019 Season With Four Games At Bruno Classic

Providence, RI – The Wagner College men's water polo team, in its fourth year of existence, commences the 2019 season at the Bruno Classic, hosted by Brown University.

About The Seahawks... The 2019 Seahawk roster, under interim head coach, Ciaran Wolohan, is composed of 22 student-athletes, which include six seniors, six juniors, one sophomore, and nine freshmen.

Wolohan Announces 2019 Captains... Coach Wolohan has named three student-athletes captains for the 2019 campaign. Senior driver Matthew Miller, senior utility Lachlan Trabinger, and junior goalie Benjamin Angulo. Miller competed in 32 games for the Seahawks in 2018, while earning the starting nod in two matches. The San Ramon, CA native netted 26 goals while finishing with 12 assists. In addition, Miller swiped nine steals and recorded two blocks. Trabinger, a native of Canberra, Australia, had a standout junior season, his first on Grymes Hill, as he scored 31 goals and tallied 13 assists, while drawing 93 exclusions, collecting 30 steals, and rejecting 17 shots. At season's end, Trabinger, garnered Second Team Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) honors. Angulo, a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic honoree, will assume the starting duty for the Seahawks.

In the Polls...
The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the 2019 preseason polls last week, with Wagner predicted to finish fifth in the MAWPC East. Last season, the Green & White set a program record for wins, finishing the year with an 18-14 overall record and a 8-4 mark in league tilts. After dropping a back-and-forth, 16-14 decision in the MAWPC semifinals to George Washington, the Seahawks went on to beat Fordham, 10-6, in the third-place match, their second-best finish in program history.

Bruno Classic Schedule... Wagner will compete in two matches on Saturday, September 7, as the Green & White will face host, No. 20 ranked Brown at 8:30 a.m. to kickoff the weekend before closing out Day 1 against MIT at 3:00 p.m. The Seahawks conclude the two-day invitational with matchups against St. Francis Brooklyn at 8:30 a.m. and No. 16 California Baptist at 11:00 a.m.
