Women's Tennis Competes At Hofstra Invitational

Hempstead, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team competed in the two-day Hofstra Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
 
"Overall, we saw some good things this weekend and also somethings that we can improve on," commented head coach, Lynn Kiro, "It is only the second event of the season and we have plenty of time to grow and improve."
 
Flight A Singles
  • Sophomore Samantha Lugtu, junior Fidan Khalilzade and senior Vedika Anand each competed in the Flight A singles bracket of the tournament.
  • Lugtu, Khalilzade and Anand each fell in the Round of 16.
  • In the consolation bracket, Lugtu defeated LIU' Elinor Storkaas, 8-3, while Khalizade bested the Sharks' Victoria Erechtchenko.
  • In the consolation semis, Siena's Nanea Perkins outlasted Lugtu while Hofstra's Alejandra Ruffini, who went on to claim in the consolation A crown, defeated Khalilzade.
 
Flight A Doubles
  • The pairing of Anand and Lugtu went 1-2 in the bracket, as the duo defeated Queens College pair of Louisa Brunetti and Lovisa Engstrand via walkover before falling in the championship round to Siena's Meagan Brown and Anastasia Koniaev, 6-2.
 
Flight B Singles
  • Second-year Seahawks Alegra d'Alessandro and Diana Pinzariu along with newcomer Mia Groetsch were in action in the Flight B bracket.
  • Pinzariu advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Hofstra's Odessa Story, 0-6, 6-4, 10-8.
  • d'Alessandro and Groetsch were edged by 6-1; 6-2 count.
  • In the quarterfinal, Pinzariu was pitted against LIU's Bianca Compuesto and fell 6-4; 6-2.
  • d'Alessandro and Groetsch were back in action in the consolation bracket, as d'Alessandro dropped an 8-2 decision to eventual champion, Hofstra's Jasmine King while Groetsch was defeated by Queens College, Aleksandra Caricic.
 
Flight B Doubles
  • d'Alessandro and Groetsch were paired to take on the combo of Marisa Ostoja and Aleksandra Caricic from Queens College in the Round of 16, falling 6-1.
  • Pinzariu and Post earned a 6-3 triumph in the quarterfinals over Araceli Aleixendri and Gabriela Sciarotta from Queens College, 6-3 before dropping a tightly contest, 7-5, decision in the semifinals to Hofstra's Ronia Dolabany and Odessa Stork.
 
Flight C Singles
  • Senior Melanie Post was in action in the Flight C bracket, as she squared off against Hofstra's Mandisa Walle in the quarterfinals, falling 6-3; 6-0
  • Post returned to action in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, as she was edged by LIU's Veronika Koudelkova, who went on to claim the title, 8-6.
 
The Seahawks return to dual match action as they will travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to tangle with Rider University.
