Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team kicked off a three-game weekend in the Spiro Sports Center by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday. The Seahawks picked up their second win of the season to the start the day, besting the La Salle Explorers 15-12. In the evening match, the Green & White would fall to the George Washington Colonials, 14-8. Wagner's record now sits at 2-11 going into a Sunday morning matchup with the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays.
Wagner 15, La Salle 12
Following a tough weekend on the road, the Seahawks, playing at home for the first time this season, came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. In the first quarter, Wagner would start off scoring four unanswered goals, before ending the period with a 5-1 advantage. They spread the ball around the pool extremely well, allowing five different players to find the back of the net, including
Vuk Bulajic,
Shaked Yacoby,
Olivér Fodor,
Lachlan Trabinger, and
András Bimbo-Szuhai. From that point, until the end of the game, the Explorers would never be able to close the gap, coming within two goals only once.
The last three quarters of the game would be a back-and-forth affair, with both teams scoring at a very even pace. Following three second quarter goals, by
Matthew Miller, Yacoby, and Trabinger, the Seahawks would enter the halftime break, leading 9-6.
The third and fourth quarters were much of the same, with Wagner and La Salle both scoring six goals apiece. Fodor would score four of the Seahawks' six, accompanied by Miller and Bulajic who each added one. The Explorers were led by a pair of centers in sophomore Tyler Williams and senior Luke Waechter, who combined for seven of La Salle's 12 goals. Waechter notched all four of his in the second half. However, the rest of the team would only be able to find the cage five times and Wagner would complete the first game of the day with a 15-12 victory.
George Washington 14, Wagner 8
After an exciting 15-12 win in their earlier match, the Seahawks looked to keep the momentum going against a tough opponent in the 10-3 George Washington Colonials. The first quarter was evenly contested, ending knotted up at 3 goals apiece. The Colonials would take three different leads in the period, but each time the Seahawks responded.
Vuk Bulajic and András Bimbo-Szhuai would both find the back of the net for Wagner in the period, including a brace from Bulajic.
The second period would follow the same storyline that has been a thorn in the heel of the Seahawks all season long, with George Washington scoring four of five goals in the period and no real response from the Green & White. Bimbo-Szuhai would score his second goal of the night for Wagner, but the Seahawks would enter the half trailing 7-4.
In the third period, needing a strong offensive response to get back into the game, the Seahawks found the back of the net three times, with a pair of goals by
Shaked Yacoby and a third by Bulajic to complete his hat trick. However, the offensive push left Wagner vulnerable on the defensive side of the pool. The Colonials would strike four times in the period and end the quarter leading the Seahawks 11-7.
The fourth quarter was all Colonials. András Bimbó-Szuhai would complete his hat trick in the period, but that would be the only time the Seahawks would find the back of the cage. A trio of goals by George Washington would set the final score at 14-8.
The Colonials were led by All-American Andrew Mavis, who totaled four scores on the day, and junior center Gabriele Simonti, who would record three goals of his own. Graduate goalkeeper Matt Taylor was a force in net as well, he knocked down nine shots, while only allowing eight to get past him.
The Seahawks will be back in the pool on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., facing off against the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. Streaming will be available
