Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team is set to host three games this weekend, including Senior Day on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Seahawks will compete in a double-header on Saturday, taking on conference foes La Salle and George Washington before hosting Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Game times for Saturday are set for 12:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., while Sunday will see ball drop at 11:00 a.m.
The Green & White went 0-4 last weekend, completing a double header in Princeton, NJ on Saturday and a double header in Lewisburg, PA on Sunday. Wagner will look to bounce back this weekend led by their captains,
Lachlan Trabinger and
Matthew Miller, and freshman standout Olivér Fodor. In seven games, Fodor has recorded 19 goals and drawn a team-leading 26 exclusions.
ABOUT LA SALLE:
The Explorers have begun the season with a record of 5-8, picking up wins against Austin College, Penn State Behrend, Washington and Jefferson, and a pair of wins over Mercyhurst. La Salle is led by junior attacker Daniel Domotor, who earned Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) co-player of the week two weeks ago, and senior attacker Jeff Brady, both of whom were added to the MAWPC-East Region "Players to Watch" list prior to the season. When scouting the Explorers, the magic number would seem to be 12; when La Salle scores 12 goals or more, they are 5-0, when they score less than 12 goals, they are 0-8. The key to this matchup is going to have to be defense for the Seahawks, who have only given up 12 or more goals five times so far this season.
ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON:
Wagner will wrap up their Saturday double-header when they take on the 9-3 George Washington Colonials. The Colonials are coming into this weekend having split a foursome of games last weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. On Saturday, they dropped a pair of match-ups with No. 14 St. Francis Brooklyn and No. 12 Harvard. They rebounded well on Sunday, picking up a duo of wins against Johns Hopkins and Salem University. George Washington appears to be a much tougher foe than La Salle, having gone 7-0 so far against unranked opponents and 2-3 against opponents in the top 20 rankings. On the season, they have scored an average of 13.5 goals per game, including breaking the 20-goal mark on two different occasions. Defensively, the Colonials have only allowed 9.5 goals per game behind graduate goalkeeper Matt Taylor who is stopping shots with a 55% save percentage. Coming into the season, George Washington was tabbed as the co-favorite to win the MAWPC, following back-to-back MAWPC Championships in 2017 and 2018. In all, George Washington returned 14 players from last season, including 389 of last year's 462 goals. The Colonials are led by two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Americans Atakan Destici and Andrew Mavis.
ABOUT JOHNS HOPKINS:
The Blue Jays will enter this weekend with a record of 3-8, earning one win per weekend on the season so far, including wins over Austin College, Iona, and Mercyhurst. They are led by senior attacker Finn Banks, who was named to the MAWPC-East region "Players to Watch" list prior to the season, and sophomore attacker Jayden Kunwar. Banks is leading the Jays with 21 assists, while Kunwar leads Johns Hopkins in goal scoring, with 30. Junior attacker John Murphy has been an effective third option as well, adding 15 goals and 15 assists on the season. In all, the Blue Jays are a young team that has been forced to replace a five-man senior class, that accounted for 500 goals, 360 assists, and 430 steals in their Johns Hopkins tenures. All of this is to be done under a first-year head coach in Max Schlegel, who replaced long-term head coach Ted Bresnahan this season.
