Princeton, NJ – The Wagner men's water polo team concluded play at the Princeton Invite this weekend with a 10-7 loss to the No. 19 Brown Bears as the Seahawks finish 1-2 for the weekend and 1-6 overall.
No. 19 Brown 10, Wagner 7
In what has become a trend early on in the season, the Seahawks stayed tight with Brown throughout the entirety of the game, but a short stretch of unanswered goals carried the Bears to victory.
Both teams would use the first quarter to try and feel each other out with only a trio of scores combined. Brown struck first, before senior captain
Matthew Miller answered, converting on a six on five to tie the game at one. After junior goalkeeper Riad Hallal stopped a Wagner five-meter, sophomore utility Andrew Penner struck back to put Brown in the lead 2-1 to end the first quarter.
After a second goal by Miller followed by a six on five conversion by junior
Jordi Alonso to make the score Brown 4, Wagner 3, the Bears would go on to score four unanswered goals to create the winning distance.
Wagner would go on to score four more goals, including two by Alonso and one by Miller to complete both of their hat tricks, as well as a goal by freshman
Shaked Yacoby, to bring the final result to Brown 10, Wagner 7.
Notable Performer
Miller led the Seahawks throughout the weekend, not only with his captain duties, but with his play as well. At the conclusion of the invitational, he totaled 14 goals on 25 shots, while adding three assists and five steals.
The Seahawks will be back in Princeton, NJ next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to take on the No. 12 Princeton Tigers before playing their first Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) match against the Navy Midshipmen at 2:00 pm.
