Field Hockey Suffers First Road Loss At Villanova

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 8-3, on Friday evening. The Seahawks are now 1-2 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 2-1.

The first quarter began as a back-and-forth affair, but the Wildcats would eventually break the deadlock with a goal by senior forward Lydia Sydnor, who was the beneficiary of a pass from senior forward Megan Vermeil. This would be the only scoring action in the first quarter, as the period would end Villanova leading 1-0.

Villanova's offense exploded in the second quarter with three goals in the first three minutes of the period, all scored by Sydnor. Freshman midfielder Maggie Mick added her first goal as a Wildcat with two minutes remaining in the half, extending the lead to 5-0 at the half.

The third quarter began much like the first with the defense showing much more resolve, holding the Wildcats scoreless for the entire period. The offense also came out looking much more energized as seven minutes into the second half freshman midfielder Hannah Meyer would get Wagner on the board with her second goal of the season, cutting the defecit to 5-1. Just  50 second later, Meyer would set up freshman Kira Mordvinov for her third goal of the season to bring the score to 5-2 in favor of the Wildcats, which is how the score stood heading to the fourth quarter.

In the final stanza, Meyer added her second goal of the game, and third on the season, but a trio of goals for Villanova would put the game out of reach as the Wildcats pulled away for the 8-3 win.

Van Spengler and graduate goalkeeper Annabel Zandvoort continued to split time in net for the Green & White, each making four saves. Meyer recorded a team-high two goals on seven shots, while also adding an assist.Mordvinov was the only other goal scorer for the Seahawks, while Frederique Soons and Grace Gibson both recorded assists on the night.

The Seahawks will be back in action this Friday as they take on the Yale Bulldogs back at home in the Wagner Field Hockey Complex. Play is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
