Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to the Yale Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-3 on the young season, while Yale moves its record to 2-3.
The first-year Green & White program continues to battle against established, high-caliber teams, but a couple down minutes in the second quarter of late has been the team's Achilles' heel.
The Bulldogs found offensive production early in the first quarter, resulting in a goal by senior midfielder Bridget Condie. After taking that 1-0 lead into the second quarter, a 3-0 Yale run over a three-minute span gave the Bulldogs a commanding 4-0 lead, which grew to 5-0 at the break, following another tally in the final minute of the first half.
The second half continued a recent positive pattern for Wagner as the Seahawks came up with long stretches of possession, resulting in multiple strong chances. However, Wagner was unable able to break down the Bulldog defense as Yale turned away four shots en route to the 6-0 win.
Statistically, Yale held a 23-9 edge in shots and a 14-8 advantage in corners.
Graduate goalkeeper
Annabel Zandvoort continued to split time in net with freshman Justine Van Spengler for the Seahawks, recording five and four saves, respectively. Freshman co-captain
Hannah Meyer registered a team-high two shots on goal and four shots overall, while classmate
Gabriella Dudek added four shots, one of which was on goal.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Sunday as they take on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at home at the Wagner Field Hockey Complex. Play is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
