Men’s Water Polo To Compete In Princeton Invite This Weekend

Princeton, NJ – The Wagner men's water polo team is set to compete in its second tournament of the 2019 season, as the Seahawks participate at the Princeton Invite September 13-14. The Green & White will face off against three familiar foes in Iona on Friday, September 13 at 3:45 p.m., before rematches with No. 17 St. Francis-Brooklyn at 7:30 p.m. and No. 19 Brown on Saturday, September 14 at 9:15 a.m.

The Green & White went 0-4 last weekend, competing in the Bruno Classic in Providence, RI.  Wagner will look to improve upon its record this weekend with a blend of proven returners along with a host of newcomers who have contributed right off the bat in their first weekend wearing Seahawk caps. Captains, Lachlan Trabinger and Matthew Miller have begun the season leading by example. In three games, Trabinger has tallied four goals and a team-best ten assists, while Miller has notched seven goals, one assist, and a team-leading five steals in four appearances. They will continue to add leadership to a Wagner team that has shown to have a lot of young talent.

Freshman two-meter Olivr Fodor had the brightest introduction at the Bruno Classic, recording multiple team-leading statistics, including shots (21), goals (9), and exclusions drawn (16), despite only appearing in three out of four games. Freshman utility Shaked Yacoby also made an immediate impact, recording three goals on 19 shots and five assists. First-year junior transfer Nicolas Butelet added two goals and three assists in his first weekend in the pool with Wagner.

ABOUT IONA:
Opening the season in the Navy Invitational, the Gaels have gotten off to a 1-3 start with losses coming at the hands of No. 2 Stanford, Fordham, and Navy. Their lone win came against Johns Hopkins by the score of 18-14. Overall, their combined plus/minus for the weekend was minus-32. Coming into the season, Iona returned 11 athletes from last season, including Second-Team All-Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) selection Patrick Hudak, a junior two-meter, who led the team with 65 goals on 180 shots last season.

ABOUT NO. 17 ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN:
The crosstown rival Terriers have an 3-1 record on the year thus far, toppling No. 16 California-Baptist, McKendree, and Wagner, while falling by the score of 13-10 to No. 14 Bucknell. Wagner is seeking revenge for a last-second 10-9 defeat to SFC in the Bruno Classic last weekend. Junior driver Ivan Stefanovic put the Terriers ahead with only 12 seconds left in regulation to give St. Francis their third straight win to begin the season. Stefanovic would be named to the NWPC Player of the Week Honor Roll, while freshman attacker Dominick Hevesi was named NWPC Rookie of the Week, after scoring eight goals during his weekend in Providence.

ABOUT NO. 19 BROWN:
The Bears will be sporting a record of 5-1 going into the Princeton Invite after notching victories over Wagner, McKendree, California-Lutheran, Connecticut College, and No. 16 California-Baptist during their opening weekend. They are led by senior attacker James Thygesen, who totaled 16 goals, 11 assists, and four steals in his first weekend of action. In all, Brown returns 15 athletes from last season when they posted an 18-14 record under head coach Felix Mercado, who is entering his 13th season. The Seahawks will be looking to avenge last weekend's season-opening 13-10 overtime loss to the Bears.
