New Field Hockey Program Blanks Hofstra 3-0 In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY – The newly-reinstated Wagner College field hockey team traveled to Hempstead, NY and blanked Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) member, Hofstra, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in the 2019 season opener.

The Green & White, who were outshot in the match, 14-11, went ahead 1-0 on freshman Kira Mordvinov first career goal as Mordvinov rebounded the deflected shot by teammate Gabrielle Dudek just five minutes into the first quarter.

Graduate Annabel Zandvoort kept the Pride off the scoreboard, recording three of her six saves in the opening stanza.

Wagner upped its lead to 2-0 with 2:44 remaining in the third period as once again Mordvinov was the beneficiary and recorded her second score of the afternoon. The first-year forward picked up the loose ball and registered her second tally of the contest, getting one past Hofstra keeper, Cecelia DeSimone.

Hannah Meyer added the final marker with 4:23 in the fourth quarter as she took the feed from teammate Joy Muller just inside the circle and pelted a shot into the netting of the goal.

The Seahawks will make their home debut on Sunday, September 8 as the Green & White will take on La Salle at 1:30 p.m. at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
