Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team fell to La Salle, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon in its home opener. The Seahawks are now 1-1 on the season while the Explorers improve to 2-2 following the very first game played at the new Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
The Explorers got on the board less than two minutes into the contest when senior forward Lauren Lechleitner deflected a pass from Rialee Allen into the top of the goal. Allen, a junior midfielder, would add to the lead five minutes later when she cleaned up a bouncing ball in the circle and slid it past Wagner goalkeeper Justine Van Spengler.
In the second quarter, La Salle's offense erupted for three goals in extending the lead to 5-0 at the half. Allen added two more goals to her total and freshman forward Casey Reilly scored her first goal as an Explorer in only her second game.
After the halftime break, the Seahawks' defense stood strong against the Explorer attack, holding the visitors scoreless in the third period and only letting in one goal in the fourth.
Van Spengler and graduate goalkeeper
Annabel Zandvoort split time in net for the Green & White, making five and eight saves, respectively. Co-captain
Hannah Meyer recorded a team-high two shots, one of which found its way on target.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Friday as they take on the Villanova Wildcats on the road at 6:00 pm.
