Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner men's lacrosse team received goals from six different players but it wasn't enough to offset three goals from Ryan Doran, and two apiece from Cole Peters and Liam Hare, as Saint Joseph's earned a 14-6 victory over the Seahawks on Saturday.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 2-11 on the season and 0-5 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, as the Seahawks will close out the 2019 season with a Senior Day matchup vs. Sacred Heart on Saturday, April 27 at Hameline Field. With the win, the Hawks improve their season record to 7-6 overall and 3-2 league play.
Wagner got out to a strong start in this one. After SJU's Shane Fable opened the day's scoring just 18 seconds into the game, the Seahawks reeled off three straight goals - from senior attackman
Kevin Gray (assist by freshman attackman
Stephen Dwyer), and junior attackmen
Dominic Branda and
Nic Ancona (assist by senior midfielder
Spencer Kaufman) – in taking a 3-1 lead with 9:15 left in the opening quarter.
The Hawks then went on a 6-0 run in taking a 7-3 halftime lead. Junior attackman
Nick Warren won the second half's opening faceoff and sprinted his way to an unassisted, breakaway goal that closed the deficit to 7-4 just 12 seconds into the third quarter. The Hawks countered with a 3-0 run in opening a 10-4 lead.
Wagner answered with consecutive scores in the final 2:17 of the third quarter by sophomore midfielder
Dan Baker, and
Kyle Stofko. The latter score came on a brilliant individual effort as the sophomore defenseman forced a turnover, and collected the ground ball, before sprinting ahead of the field for his first career goal, to make it 10-6. In addition to his first career score, Stofko delivered a career-tying and game-high five caused-turnover effort, in addition to scooping up three ground balls.
That 10-6 score, however, is as close as Wagner would get as SJU blanked the Seahawks 4-0 in the fourth quarter in fashioning the 14-6 win.
