Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Sacred Heart 17-5 On Senior Day

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's lacrosse team dropped a 17-5 decision to Sacred Heart in the 2019 season finale on Senior Day at wind-swept Hameline Field.
 
Prior to the game, the Seahawks, under the direction of first-year head coach Bill McCutcheon, honored their 14 seniors in an on-field ceremony.
 
With the loss, Wagner concludes the 2019 campaign with a 2-12 overall record and an 0-6 mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in league, a mark that earned SHU a berth in next week's four-team NEC Tournament.
 
After senior attackman Kevin Gray buried the game's first goal, off an assist from junior attackman Dominic Branda, Sacred Heart scored the next six goals in building a 6-1 lead en route to an 8-2 cushion at the half. Wagner opened the second half on a 2-1 run, with both scores coming from junior attackman Nic Ancona, to draw within six goals at 9-3. But this is as close as the Seahawks would get.
 
Ancona (2g) and Gray (1g, 1a) paced the Seahawks with two points apiece. Four Seahawks finished with one point each in senior attackman John Norton (1g), freshman attackman Stephen Dwyer (1g), freshman midfielder Jack Brady (1g), and senior attackman Davis Prince (1).
 
In goal, senior Matt Sefcik had 19 saves in just 50:55 of playing time to finish his career with a career save total of 693, a figure that ranks second among all active Division I goalies, as well as second on the Wagner all-time record list.
 
Senior Omar Alhagiko came on to play the game's final 9:05 front of the cage, and came up with four saves while allowinf just one goal. 
 
For Sacred Heart, the Pioneers were led by Logan Liljeberg's six points, which came on four goals and two assists, while Joe Sagesse added four points on three goals and one assist, Goalie Brooks Dutton was credited with eight saves.
