Women's Water Polo | 4/14/19
Philadelphia, PA – The No. 18 ranked Wagner women's water polo team defeated Villanova (18-6) and Virginia Military Institute (21-3) to clinch the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title and the no. 1 seed heading into championship weekend on April 27-28.
Wagner 18, Villanova 6:
The Seahawks jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the halfway point, scoring six goals in the first stanza and five in the second.
Junior attacker
Jacqui Sjogren led the offense once again, tallying five goals and drawing seven exclusions. Sophomore
Malia Josephson found the back of the net four times as freshman
Sofia Diaz Alvarez and sophomore
Savannah Henshaw each contributed a hat trick apiece.
Diaz Alvarez became the first Seahawk in history to score 100 goals as a freshman with her three tallies against the Wildcats.
Sophomore
Daisy Nankervis notched two goals as redshirt junior
Kristy Donkin registered one goal in the win. Donkin also dished out four assists and grabbed three steals.
Defensively, sophomore goalie
Katherine Campbell made 10 saves and grabbed one steal while dishing out one assist.
Wagner 21, Virginia Military Institute 3:
The Green & White came out firing, scoring seven unanswered goals to begin the first period of play.
In the second quarter, the Seahawks scored six goals and held the Keydets to just two, setting the score at 13-2 at the end of the first half. Wagner added four more goals while VMI tallied one more in the third period to take a 17-3 lead. The Green & White held the Keydets scoreless in the final eight minutes of play and added three more goals.
Josephson and Diaz Alvarez each finished with five goals apiece in the victory. Sjogren, Nankervis and junior
Franciska Milo-Sidlo each tallied two goals, respectively.
Freshman Philippa Nash, sophomore
Serena Thurman and Henshaw each added one goal apiece. Freshman
Mikaela Wells blocked four shots while Campbell added three saves.
Entering into next weeks MAAC Championship held at Marist on April 27-28, the Seahawks are the top seed in competition and will look to make history in capturing their sixth-straight MAAC Championship.
