2019 NEC TOURNAMENT FIELD SET
Staten Island, NY – Redshirt senior guard
Romone Saunders poured in 26 points while senior guard
Elijah Davis added 17 but it wasn't enough as Robert Morris pulled away late for a 69-60 win in the regular season finale on Senior Day at the Spiro Sports Center.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 13-16 overall and 8-10 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, which gives Wagner #NECMBB the No. 7 seed in next week's league tournament. Thus, on Wednesday, March 6, the Green & White will make the short trek to Hackensack, NJ to meet No. 2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) in an NEC Tournament quarterfinal round matchup.
FDU and Saint Francis U wound up sharing NEC regular season titles but the Red Flash earned the No. 1 seed based on tiebreaker scenarios.
Wagner had things going its way throughout a defensive half-court minded first half in taking a 28-20 lead at the intermission. In the second half, RMU was able to turn the game into a faster-paced, more wide open, full court affair in outscoring the Seahawks 49-32 over the game's final 20 minutes.
The Colonials opened the second half on 12-2 blitz in taking their first of the lead game since the early going at 32-30. Wagner answered with a 7-3 burst which gave the Seahawks a 37-35 lead with 12:42 to go. This would prove to be Wagner's final lead of the game as Josh Williams drained a three-pointer at the 11:53 mark to put RMU into the lead for good at 38-37.
Cold shooting in the second half prevented Wagner from mounting any offensive consistency as the Seahawks shot just just 18.5 percent in the second half (5-of-27), including 1-of-15 from three-point range.
Williams paced RMU with 14 points, his brother, Jon Williams, added 12 while Yannis Mendy and Charles Bains finished with 10 points apiece.
