For the 10
th time this season, all five FDU starters scored in double figures, led by All-NEC Second-Team honoree Mike Holloway Jr.'s 18 points and 15 from All-NEC First-Teamer Darnell Edge.
Senior guard
Elijah Davis paced Wagner with 23 points, while tying for team-high honors in rebounds with eight. Redshirt senior guard, and
Second-Team All-NEC selection
Romone Saunders, added nine points, as he too ended his stellar Seahawk career with eight rebounds on the night.
"Congratulations to FDU on moving on to the semifinal round. Those guys played a great 40-minute game, made shots, pushed the ball, played to their strengths, took us out of every single thing we were trying to do offensively," said Wagner head coach
Bashir Mason, who has led the Seahawks to NEC Tournament appearances in all seven seasons at the helm, as well as two regular season conference championships. "I thought early on they were a championship-caliber team, and they showed tonight, even losing one of their starters, that they're good enough to win this whole thing.
"For my guys, my seniors, this is something I'll never get used to. It's one of the hardest things in the world to watch those young men for four years and then to play their last game", Mason added. "I''ll never get used to that feeling, however, I appreciate what those guys did for our program over their four years. We got two regular season championships with all four of those guys (Davis, Saunders,
Devin Liggeons and
AJ Sumbry). Their hard work. and their blood, sweat, and tears, is certainly appreciated by my program."
NOTES - Saunders, who, in addition to being named a 2019 Second-Team All-NEC selection, was a Third-Team All-NEC choice in 2018, finishes his brilliant Seahawk career ranked 17th all-time in career scoring with 1,335 points, and tied for 7th all-time in three-point field goals made with 189. Sumbry, meanwhile, concluded his Wagner career with 136 career blocked shots, good for third place on the Wagner all-time career list.
