Elon, NC – Tied at 6-6 after seven innings, the Elon University Phoenix rallied to score four in the bottom of the eighth in defeating the Wagner College baseball team 10-6 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
Junior designated hitter
Dario Anderson led Wagner at the plate, going 2 for 4 and driving in a career-best three RBIs for the Green and White. Classmate
Freddy Sabido (1-for-3) and
Tyler Sanfillippo (1-for-2) also batted in runs for the visitors.
Seahawk starter
Neil Abbatiello lasted 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits. The senior left-hander walked two batters but recorded six strikeouts. Newcomer
McCae Allen (0-2) took the loss, going two innings while giving up four earned in the eighth. Allen struck out three batters while walking one in his outing this afternoon.
Seven of the nine Phoenix batters had at least one hit in the contest, led by Ty Adcock, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and drove in two RBIs. Cam Devanney and Garrett Stonehouse each had two hits and three RBIs apiece in the win. Kyle Brnovich went 4.2 innings, giving up two hits and four runs (three earned) while walking five and fanning eight batters. Brandon Justice earned the victory, throwing the final 4.1 frames in giving up one run over three hits.
Both starters didn't allow a hit until the top of the fourth, where the Seahawks got the game's first runs. Sabido led off with a single to right and stole second after senior
Joe Silvestrone flew out to right field. Back-to-back walks of Johnson and Sanfillippo loaded the bases for Anderson.
The switch-hitting Anderson roped a 1-1 pitch from Brnovich to right that scored Sabdio and Johnson came in as the Elon first baseman misplayed the ball. The Phoenix got one back in the bottom of the inning. Adcock and Devanney both reached on base hits. Matt Oldham took Abbatiello's pitch back-up-the-middle that plated Adcock and cut the Wagner lead to 2-1.
In the fifth, the Seahawks tacked on three more runs to extend its lead to 5-1. Two straight walks followed by a wild pitch moved runners in scoring position for Sabdio, who delivered a RBI groundout to first that scored junior
Eric Lauk.
Following a pitching change, Wagner drew two more walks, forcing the Phoenix to once again head to the bullpen. On a 2-1 pitch from Justice, Anderson came through, again, with a two-run RBI single to right but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. Elon responded in its half of the fifth, cutting the lead to 5-4. Adcock tripled to right center that plated two and came in to score on a sacrifice fly to left off-the-bat of Devanney.
The Phoenix took the lead in the next inning, as Adam Spurlin scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5 went ahead on a Stonehouse RBI single. Wagner quickly answered in the top of the seventh as Sanfillippo connected on a two-out, RBI single to left that knotted the game at 6-6.
Elon had runners on second and third with one out when Stonehouse once again came through, this time, sending a double down the right field line that cleared the bases. He moved to third on the throw. Allen was able to strikeout Joe Satterfield for the second out. He intentionally walked Adcock but Devanney came through with Elon's second, two-run RBI hit in the inning, singling through the left side that gave the Phoenix a 10-6 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
