Anthony Pecora connected on the go-ahead solo home run that lifted Wagner to a 7-6 win over Elon in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
Seven of the ten Wagner (1-7) batters recorded a hit in the contest, led by senior 3B
Will Johnson, who continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the Seahawk victory. Junior designated hitter,
Dario Anderson, furthered his career-day, going 2-for-5 while driving in two RBIs.
Seahawk starter,
Eric Ligda, tossed six innings, allowing three runs on just two hits while walking five and striking out a season-high seven batters. Junior right-hander,
Nick Robino, earned his first win out of the bullpen, tossing two innings, while giving up two runs, walking two and striking out two. Newcomer
John LaPointe earned his first collegiate save, finishing the tenth with a strikeout.
Elon was held to just five hits, two of which came from RF Garrett Stonehouse, who also drove in two RBI in the setback. Ty Adcock, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs in game one, was tagged with the loss.
Both teams went scoreless until the third, when the visiting Seahawks put up a four-spot to grab the early lead. Pecora walked and junior LF
Freddy Sabido reached on an infield single. Senior CF
Joe Silvestrone plated the first run of the contest, sending a single to left field, which plated Pecora. Johnson followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Sabido for a 2-0 lead. Anderson, with the count at 1-1, singled through the right side that cleared the bases as Johnson and Silvestrone crossed the plate. Elon got on the board in the bottom half on a Stonehouse RBI double.
Wagner tacked on two more in taking a 6-1 lead in the fourth. A pair of one-out hits from sophomore catcher
Brandon Hall and Pecora gave the Seahawks runners on first and second. Silvestrone reached on a throwing error by the catcher that loaded the bases for Johnson. On a 1-0 pitch, the senior 3B singled to center that brought in both Pecora and Hall in giving the Seahawks a five-run cushion.
The Phoenix responded in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Stanley reached base after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second came moved up a base on Stonehouse base hit. Both runners advance, with Stanley scoring Elon's first run on a wild pitch from Ligda. Stonehouse came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Joe Satterfield.
Wagner held the lead until the later portion of the contest as Elon scored in the bottom of the eighth, to make it 6-4, before tying the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Oldham doubled, which moved Adam Spurling to third. Stanley singled up the middle that scored Spurlin. Stonehouse tied the game with a sac-fly to center off Robino.
In the top of the tenth, facing Adcock, Pecora belted the 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall, that gave the Seahawks the lead. In the bottom of the inning, LaPointe came on for Robino. The freshman reliever struck out Liam O'Regan before Spurlin reached on an error. He was quickly retired as LaPointe picked him off (1-3-6) before getting Oldham to foul out to third to end the ballgame.
These two teams conclude their three-game series tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. from Latham Park.
