Long Beach, CA – The No. 16 Wagner women's water polo team concluded its trip out west with a 13-7 defeat against No. 15 Long Beach.
The 49ers were the first to score in the noon matchup between the No. 15 and No. 16 teams in the nation. Sophomore
Malia Josephson then scored to even the score at 1-1.
Rookie
Sofia Diaz Alvarez found the back of the cage as Long Beach registered two more goals before the end of the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead over the Green & White.
Junior
Jacqui Sjogren and Josephson added one goal apiece in the second period as the Seahawks held the 49ers to a single goal, knotting the score at 4-4 at the half.
Long Beach kicked off the third stanza with six straight goals to take a 10-4 lead. The 49ers continued the offensive stretch into the fourth period, scoring three more before Josephson tallied a goal to secure a hat trick.
Senior
Erica Hardy notched her first and second goals back to back with just under two minutes left to play. As time expired, Wagner fell to Long Beach with a final count of 13-7.
Despite the loss, sophomore
Katherine Campbell made four saves and grabbed two steals.
The Seahawks are back in action at home March 23-24 as they continue Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Grymes Hill.
