Women's Water Polo | 3/15/19
Los Angeles, CA – The No. 16 Wagner women's water polo team fell to No. 12 Loyola Marymount in overtime by a count of 15-13 before defeating Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent No. 20 Marist 11-10.
Loyola Marymount 15, Wagner 13:
Senior
Erica Hardy led the Green & White in a competitive match throughout, registering four goals and dishing out five assists. After back and forth play, the Lions scored with just 18 seconds to knot the score at 13-13 and take the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Loyola Marymount secured the win, tallying two more goals to top off the Seahawks.
Despite the loss, freshman
Sofia Diaz Alvarez totaled a hat trick, while redshirt junior
Kristy Donkin and sophomore
Malia Josephson each scored two goals, respectively.
Junior
Jacqui Sjogren found the back of the net once, as sophomore
Katherine Campbell blocked five shots in the cage.
Wagner 11, Marist 10:
The Red Foxes took the lead in the first quarter, with a score of 3-1, as sophomore
Daisy Nankervis got the first tally for the Seahawks.
Nankervis then opened the second period with a goal before Donkin scored her first of the game to tie the score at 3-3. Sjogren then scored off a counter attack to take the lead.
Diaz Alvarez and Josephson also found the back of the net before the end of the first half as well as two Marist goals to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Green & White.
To open the third stanza, the Red Foxes scored back to back goals to take the lead back. The third period ended in a an 8-8 stalemate. After back and forth goals, Donkin secured the win with a buzzer beater shot from half pool as time expired to lift Wagner to a thrilling 11-10 victory.
