Providence, RI – The No. 16-ranked Wagner women's water polo team defeated Bucknell by a count of 10-7 to wrap up the Brown Invite with a 3-1 record on the weekend, while also extending its win streak to two.
After the first eight minutes of play, the Seahawks led the Bison 3-2 on goals from redshirt junior
Kristy Donkin (2) and junior
Jacqui Sjogren (1).
Bucknell opened the second stanza with two tallies before senior captain
Erica Hardy earned a five meter penalty and freshman
Sofia Diaz Alvarez converted to tie the score at 4-4.
Before the conclusion of the half, the Bison capitalized on a power-play opportunity to take the lead at 5-4. Donkin and sophomore
Malia Josephson notched back to back goals before Sjogren fought in the middle to earn an exclusion. Hardy took the five meter penalty shot and was able to find the back of the net.
Donkin blocked her second shot of the game before the third period ended in a score of 7-5 in favor of Wagner. Hardy scored again to begin the fourth and final quarter as Bucknell converted on its third penalty of the match to set the score at 8-6.
Head coach
Chris Radmonovich called a timeout with 4:47 left on the clock to design a play for his team. As a result, Donkin netted her fourth goal of the game, followed by an insurance goal from Sjogren who hammered it home from the center.
Bucknell scored one last time, but still fell short of the win as the Seahawks came out on top with a final score of 10-7. Sophomore goalie
Katherine Campbell made four saves in the win.
The Green & White are back in action February 9-10 as they travel to Lewisburg, PA for the Bucknell Invite.
