Greenville, NC – The Wagner College softball team earned its first victory of the season in style with a 1-0 victory over Big 10 member Purdue in the Seahawks' season opener at the ECU Pirate Clash on Friday morning.
Junior
Amelia Van Orman earned the start in the circle and turned in a gem, allowing just four hits while giving up one walk and striking out one batter in a complete game victory.
"It was a great win for the program today and a fantastic team effort," said head coach
Lindsey Ubrun following the victory. "Amelia threw a great game and our defense stepped up in key situations to protect the shutout."
The Seahawks took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. In the first at-bat of the season, senior
Karen Prihoda, a 2018 All-NEC selection, singled up the middle and advanced to third on an error by the Boilermakers.
Two batters later, junior
Kaila Smith delivered the first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the ensuing innings, both teams were engaged in a pitcher's duel, with van Orman and Purdue's Sydney Bates combining for just seven hits and no earned runs throughout the entire contest.
With the game on the line in the seventh inning, Van Orman struck out Purdue's Siena Wagner before getting catcher Alexa Binckes to ground out. With two outs, pinch hitter Alex Echazarreta popped up as Van Orman sat down the opposition in order to preserve the victory.
Aside from Prihoda, juniors
Alyssa Tucker and
Hannah Lewis were the other two Seahawks to record hits on the day.
The Seahawks will be back in action later this afternoon as they take on the host of the Pirate Clash, East Carolina University, at 5 pm.
