Greenville, NC – Following a stunning 1-0 upset over Purdue of the Big 10 Conference in the season opener earlier today, the Wagner softball team suffered a 7-6 walk-off loss to East Carolina on Friday Night.
The loss evens the Seahawks' record at 1-1, while the Pirates move to 5-1 on the young season.
This afternoon's contest looked like Wagner's for the taking, as the Green and White led 5-0 after the first two innings.
After tossing a four-hit shutout in game one of the day, junior
Amelia Van Orman delivered with her bat this time around, giving the the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single that scored senior
Karen Prihoda.
In the second inning, Wagner added four more runs, as a base hit by senior
Jessica Carlucci, a walk to senior
Lauren Serrato, and a Prihoda single loaded the bases.
The Seahawk offense took advantage, as Van Orman, junior
Kaila Smith, and freshman
Natalie Del Ponte delivered three straight singles to plate four runs. For Del Ponte, it was the first two RBIs of her collegiate career.
The Seahawks added another run in the sixth as Prihoda stole home to make it 6-0 in favor of the visitors.
ECU battled back with two runs in the fifth and won the game with five runs in the seventh.
In the circle, freshmen
Eve Harvey and
Kayla Hooks made their collegiate debuts, with Harvey earning the start and tossing six innings, while Hooks was charged with the loss after coming on in relief.
The Seahawks held a 13-12 overall advantage in hits, as Carlucci led the way with four hits while Prihoda added three. Van Orman and Del Ponte led the team with two RBIs apiece.
The ECU Pirate Clash returns tomorrow with two games as the Seahawks take on the Boilermakers at 9 am and Cleveland State at 2:30 pm.
