Baltimore, MD – The Wagner men's water polo finished off the regular season going 1-2 over the weekend. They defeated the Navy Midshipmen 13-12 in a triple overtime thriller Saturday morning, before suffering a pair of losses to No. 19 George Washington, 24-15, and Johns Hopkins, 23-22.
The Seahawks will have the next week off, before heading to Lewisburg, PA to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championships on Friday, November 22 through Sunday, November 24.
Wagner 13, Navy 12 - 3OT
Vuk Bulajic kept his streak of superb offensive performances going, leading the Seahawks with five goals, but it was freshman
Karl Lovett's second career goal in triple overtime that would seal the deal for the Green & White.
After 32 minutes of play, the teams headed into overtime knotted up at 11 goals apiece. Wagner struck first in extra time, when
Matthew Miller completed his hat trick to give the Green & White a one goal advantage heading into the second overtime period.
With only 23 seconds remaining, Navy center Bobby Lee would secure his third goal of the game, all scored in the fourth quarter and overtime, to send the teams into a sudden death period. That was when Lovett struck, giving the Seahawks a 13-12 victory to begin the weekend.
No. 19 George Washington 24, Wagner 15
Miller single handedly led the Seahawks through the first period, outscoring the Colonials 6-5 himself, but a 15-5 goal swing in the second and third periods would lead George Washington past the Green & White.
Miller would add three more goals to his tally, ending the day at nine total, but it was nine goals from Atakan Destici and seven goals from Andrew Mavis that guided the Colonials to a 9 goal victory, 24-15.
Johns Hopkins 23, Wagner 22
Olivér Fodor netted a career high 14 goals, but it wouldn't be enough as Johns Hopkins, led by sophomore Emerson Sullivan and his 12 goals, came away with a tight win.
Wagner held the lead, 4-3, after one period of play, but a 9-7 spread in the second stanza is what made the ultimate decision. Both teams would score an even 11 goals in the second-half goals to reach the eventual final score of 23-22, in favor of the Blue Jays.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR WAGNER
The Seahawks will be back in the pool on Friday, November 22, as the Green & White begin competition in the MAWPC Conference Championships in Lewisburg, PA.
