La Verne, CA – The Wagner men's water polo team began the Gary Troyer Tournament splitting a pair of games on Friday by beating the Fresno-Pacific Sunbirds and falling to the Santa Clara Broncos. Building off of a strong trio of games at home last weekend, the Seahawks record now sits at 4-12 (2-4) on the season.
Wagner 9, Fresno-Pacific 6
In the first game of the day, the Seahawks battled the Sunbirds in a back-and-forth affair for three quarters, before closing the door in the final stanza to pull out a 9-6 victory. Wagner was led by co-captain Lachlan Trabinger and reigning Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAPWC) Rookie of the Week Olivér Fodor, who combined for four goals and two assists.
In the first three quarters, Wagner would find a pair of goals each from both Matthew Miller and András Bimbó-Szuhai, as well as a goal apiece from Vuk Bulajic, Trabinger, and Fodor. The Sunbirds, led by freshman utility Zach Zetz and his pair of goals, would find the net six times in the first three quarters of the game.
In the fourth quarter, however, Olivér Fodor would help put the game out of reach for the Green & White, with a pair of goals to cap off his hat trick. While goalkeeper Ethan Zirh, behind his nine saves, would keep the Sunbirds from scoring at all in the period. This would set the final score at 9-6 in favor of the Seahawks, securing them their fourth consecutive victory over the Sunbirds in as many seasons.
Santa Clara 13, Wagner 11
In the afternoon game, the Seahawks found guidance from this season's proven leaders in co-captains Trabinger and Miller, as well as Fodor, who each recorded a hat trick during the game. The Broncos were led by seniors Mac Carey and Ryan Werner, who combined for seven goals during the game, leading Santa Clara to an eventual 13-11 victory.
Wagner stayed within two goals of the Broncos for all of the first half, but in the second half, three consecutive scores by Carey and Patrick Kirk, helped push the Santa Clara lead to five.
While Wagner would be able to respond, with goals by Fodor, Miller, and Trabinger, another pair of goals by Carey and Kirk would put the game of out of reach for the Green & White, with Wagner falling by a score of 13-11. This will be Wagner's closest finish against the Broncos in the fourth meeting between the two programs.
