New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team is set to take on the Iona College Gaels on Wednesday evening in New Rochelle, NY at 7:00 p.m.
ALL-TIME AGAINST IONA:
In five all-time meetings with the Gaels, the Seahawks are 5-0, dating back to October 15, 2016. On Wednesday, Wagner will look for its sixth straight triumph over Iona and to take the season series after earning a 13-9 victory back on September 13. As a whole, the Green & White are averaging close to 14 goals a match against Iona while limiting the Gaels to just 7.4 goals per game. In the previous five meetings, Wagner hasn't allowed Iona to break the double-digit goals threshold.
LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
The Seahawks are returning to the pool for the first time since October 5, when they competed at the Gary Troyer Invitational in La Verne, CA. Wagner went 1-3 over its four-match West Coast trip, opening the two-day tournament with a 9-6 triumph over the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds. The Seahawks dropped a pair of tightly contested matches to Santa Clara (13-11) and Chapman (9-7) before ending the weekend with a setback against No. 9 ranked, UC-San Diego.
Offensively, Wagner was paced by freshman
Olivér Fodor, who closed out the weekend with 10 goals, two assists, five drawn exclusions, two steals, and a block. Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Ethan
Zirh recorded 42 saves, three steals and added three assists over the four-game span.
ABOUT IONA:
The Gaels enter Wednesday's match looking to halt a five-match losing streak as they enter play with an overall record of 2-11. Both of Iona's wins came back in September, as the Gaels earned an 18-14 triumph over Johns Hopkins (September 8) and Penn State-Behrend, 15-7, back on September 22.
Iona is led by sophomore driver German Rodriguez, who ranks first on the team in shots (72), goals (27), assists (13), and sprint wins (26). Brett Hofer is the team's second-leading scorer with 24 goals, followed by Lester Machado (19), Andrew Brozovic (18) and Quinn Lloyd (15). In goal, the Gaels rely on Jorge Andres Torres, as he has notched 121 saves on the season in facing 268 shots (.451 save percentage).
Following the matchup with Wagner, Iona will head to Erie, PA to compete in the Penn State
Behrend Invitational this weekend.
