New Britain, CT  –  The first week of Northeast Conference (NEC) play concludes on Monday as the Wagner College women's basketball team squares off against the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils at Detrick Gymnasium.  Both teams enter Monday's contest looking for its first league win as Wagner dropped a 76-61 decision at St. Francis Brooklyn while the Blue Devils fell to Sacred Heart, 66-61. 


Inside The Numbers:
  • 1160 - Saturday's contest at St. Francis Brooklyn marked the 1160 Division I game in Wagner women's basketball history, as the Seahawks are 466-694 as a Division I program. 
  • 160 - Head women's basketball coach, Heather Jacobs, picked up career coaching victory number 160 when Wagner defeated College of Staten Island, 86-59, back on December 21 at the Spiro Sports Center.
  • - Wagner is looking to snap a four-game losing streak to Central Connecticut, last picking up a 64-63 win back on February 20, 2016 in New Britain, CT
  • 3/6 - Senior guard Nakylia Carter has recorded three or more steals in six straight games. 

Last Time Out For Wagner:
  • Trailing 44-30 at halftime, the Wagner College women's basketball team erupted on a 15-6 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter to cut the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers lead to five, 50-45, before succumbing to the Terriers, 76-61, on Saturday afternoon at the Pope Physical Education Center.
  • Three Seahawks finished the contest scoring in double figures, led by sophomore Khaleah Edwards, who poured in a team-best 14 points in 36 minutes of action. Fellow classmate, Taylah Simmons, contributed 12 points off-the-bench on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor in 21 minutes of play. Freshman Emilija Krista Grava turned in her seventh double digit scoring performance of the season, finishing with 10 points. 
  • The Green & White also got contributions from sophomore guard Alayshia Dailey, who tallied eight points and four rebounds while senior Nakylia Carter rattled off six points to go along with team-highs in rebounds (5), assists (6) and steals (3). 
  • Jade Johnson led the way for SFBK with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field in 36 minutes. Ebony Horton added 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 37 minutes of play while Amy O'Neill added 18 points to go along with a game-best eight assists, six steals and six rebounds for the Terriers.

Inside The Wagner | Central Connecticut Series:
  • Wagner and Central Connecticut are squaring off for the 44th time, with the Blue Devils holding a 28-15 advantage in the head-to-head series. 
  • The Seahawks are looking to snap a four-game losing streak against Central Connecticut, last picking up a win back on February 20, 2016 in New Britain, CT, a 64-63 decision. 
  • Since 2002, Wagner is just 9-19 against Central Connecticut.  

 
Scouting Central Connecticut Blue Devils:
 
  • Central Connecticut was predicted to finish eighth in the annual preseason coaches poll after finishing the 2017-18 season with a 7-23. 
  • The Blue Devils started the 2018-19 campaign dropping its first four games (at Brown, vs. Lehigh, at Rutgers and at Massachusetts), before securing a 60-36 road victory at Morgan State (11/26). 
  • Central Connecticut is looking to snap a three-game losing streak, most recently falling to Sacred Heart in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener, 66-61. The Blue Devils trailed 31-23 at halftime and opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a slim 32-31 as Kiana Patterson drilled a deep jumper at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter on her way to a 18 point, five rebound performance. 
  • Patterson is the team's leading scorer at 17.0 ppg, which ranks fifth in the conference. Ashley Berube is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 6.4 caroms a contest, good for seventh in the league. 
  • Collectively, CCSU is scoring 57.5 points per game on 37.0 percent shooting from the field. The Blue Devils are only converting 26.6 percent from beyond-the-arc, which is tied for last in the league. Conversely, the Blue Devils lead the league in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage, holding opponents to just 36.6 shooting from the floor and 26.7 percent from three-point range.  


Seahawk Tidbits:
  • As of 1/5/19, Wagner is among the top-80 programs in all of Division I in three-point field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 28.3 percent shooting from the outside. Among the ten-NEC schools, Wagner is second in this department, trailing Central Connecticut. 
  • Freshman forward Emilija Krista Grava ranks first among all NEC-newcomers in minutes played (29.2), second in rebounds (5.8 rpg), third in scoring (10.3 ppg), and fourth in field percentage (44.0%).  Additionally, in seven road games this season, Krista Grava is pouring in 11.9 ppg and a team-best 6.1 rpg in 31.1 minutes of action.
  • Over the last five games, sophomore Taylah Simmons is the lone Seahawk to tally double-figures, averaging 10.6 ppg on 47.9 percent shooting from the floor in 23.4 minutes of play. 
  • Senior guard, Nakylia Carter has logged 30 or more minutes in 11 of 12 games this season. Carter extended her streak of three or more steals to six consecutive games.

  • Wagner embarks on a three-game homestand, beginning on Saturday, January 12 as the Seahawks square off against Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m.
