Women's Tennis Concludes Two-Day Hofstra Invitational: Two Seahawks Claim Individual Titles

2018 Hofstra Invitational Results
 
Hempstead, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team concluded play at the Hofstra University Invitational on Saturday. In total, the Seahawks will be bringing back two titles as freshman Samantha Lugtu took home the "B" Consolation crown while teammate Alegra d'Alessandro is bringing back the "C" Consolation title.
 
A Singles
  • Sophomore Fidan Khalilzade along with junior Vedika Anand represented the Seahawks in the "A" singles bracket.
  • Khalilzade was defeated in the Round of 16 by Fairleigh Dickinson's Aleksandra Vorozheikina, 8-2
  • Anand edged FDU's Marta Ruszczynska, 8-6, to advance to the quarterfinal round.
  • In the quarterfinals, Anand suffered an 8-2 setback against eventual champion, Michal Kaplan.
 
A Consolation
  • In a back-and-forth contest, Khalilzade kept pace with her counterpart, FDU's Tatiana Eftenoiu but was bested, 8-5.
  • Anand was ousted by Patricia Eftenoiu, 8-4, in the consolation quarterfinal round.
 
B Singles
  • Senior Rina Baynes and newcomers Lugtu and Emma Reeves were in action for Wagner in the "B" Singles bracket.
  • Baynes suffered an 8-4 defeat to Fairleigh Dickinson's Smriti Singh.
  • Lugtu was edged by Siena's Anessa Leyva, 9-8 (10-8), in a thrilling back-and-forth contest.
  • Reeves secured a Round of 16 victory for her first collegiate, defeating Anamaria Vladescu of FDU, 8-6.
  • In the quarterfinals, Hofstra's Hailey Feuer defeated Reeves, 8-2, before she was bested in the championship round by FDU's Singh.

B Consolation
  • Baynes fell to Siena's Nanea Perkins, 8-3.
  • In an all-Wagner match in the consolation quarterfinals, Lugtu was pitted against Reeves with the two showcasing their talent before Lugtu was able to claim an 8-5 victory over her teammate.
  • Lugtu moved into the finals with an 8-4 win over Anamaria Vladescu of FDU
  • The first-year Seahawk claimed Wagner's first title of the two-day event as she got past Perkins, 8-6.
 
C Singles
  • d'Alessandro and Diana Pinzariu competed for the Green & White in the "C" Singles bracket.
  • d'Alessandro put forth a valiant effort as she couldn't get past Fairleigh Dickinson's Carolin Menzen, 8-6
  • Pinzariu blanked FDU's Isabelle Ismanescu, 8-0, to advance to the semifinal round
  • In the semifinals, the first-year Seahawk Pinzariu earned an 8-5 win over Hofstra's Ana Canahuate-Torres, to advance to the final round.
  • In the finals, Pinzariu fell behind in the match before falling 8-2 to FDU's Carolin Menzen.

C Consolation
  • d'Alessandro took home the "C" Consolation crown after getting past Siena's Ann Phillips, 9-8 (8-1) and earning an 8-4 victory over FDU's Isabelle Ismanescu
 
Wagner will compete in its first dual match of the season as they will travel to West Long Branch, NJ on October 2 as they will square off against Monmouth University. The match is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
