Smithfield, RI – Strong pitching by senior
Morgan Brown and a five-run fifth inning propelled the Wagner College softball team to a 7-3 win over Bryant in game one of Sunday's Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader, as the Seahawks earned their second split of the weekend.
Following the victory in game one, the Green and White suffered a 12-4 defeat in the second game and now stand at 8-19 on the year and 2-5 in the NEC, while the Bulldogs improve to 9-20 in 2018. Today's split comes on the heels of yesterday's split at Central Connecticut when the Seahawks won the opener 2-0 before falling by a 2-1 count in the nightcap.
Game 1 – Wagner 7, Bryant 3
Brown followed her complete game shutout victory at CCSU yesterday with another complete game victory, striking out five batters while allowing three runs on six hits.
The Seahawks took the lead in the second inning on a two-run single to right center field by sophomore
Alyssa Tucker, but the Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second and took a 3-2 lead in the third.
In the fifth, a leadoff walk to senior
Maddie Marable and a single by sophomore
Hannah Lewis, set Wagner up with two runners on base with no outs and the top of the order coming to bat.
The Seahawks took full advantage, as junior
Karen Prihoda gave Wagner the lead with a two-run double. Two batters later, senior
Maite Reece extended the lead with an RBI single, scoring Prihoda and forcing the Bulldogs to make a pitching change with sophomore
Kaila Smith coming to the plate.
Smith did not wait around, crushing the first pitch of the at bat over the right field fence in giving Wagner a 7-3 lead.
With the four-run advantage, Brown cruised to the finish, allowing just one hit through the final three innings.
The Seahawks totaled eight hits throughout the contest, with Prihoda and Tucker totaling two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Game 2 – Bryant 12, Wagner 4 (5 innings)
The Seahawks once again jumped out in front, as an RBI single by Reece scored Prihoda in the top of the first inning gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead.
Wagner then scored one run apiece in the third, fourth, and fifth innings on Prihoda's third home run of the season and sacrifice flies by Tucker and Smith, but it wasn't enough, as Bryant's offense took over early.
The Bulldogs scored 12 runs on 15 hits, holding Wagner to five hits in game two. Prihoda once again led the Seahawks, going 3-3 with an RBI, while Reece and senior
Stefanie Aplin had one hit apiece.
Freshman pitcher
Arielle Koerber was charged with the loss, while junior
Ciera Luna and sophomore
Amelia Van Orman came on in relief. In her fourth appearance of the season, Van Orman tossed two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Next up, Wagner will travel to Saint Peter's for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday before playing host to Rider one day later.
