Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team concluded its brief two-match homestand with a 6-1 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Fairfield, on Thursday afternoon.
The Seahawks, winners of back-to-back matches, improve to 8-6 on the season while the Stags fall to 4-8 on the year.
The Green & White took two of three in doubles action, recording victories at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. Junior
Eric Poland and sophomore
Dylan Walters were 6-2 winners over the pairing of Allan Magid and Jeffrey Rodgers. For Poland/Walters, the win gave them its team-best 11th victory of the season (11-6) and eighth in dual match play (8-3).
In No. 1 doubles, the Seahawk duo of juniors
Anatoliy Lashkul and
Dale Sandy also recorded a 6-2 victory over their counterparts, Tyler Shibles and Will Townsend Font. Lashkul and Sandy are now 10-7 on the season as a team.
Wagner went on to take five of six singles matches in picking up the team's eighth victory of the season. Lashkul was a 7-5, 6-7 (3-5), 6-3 winner at No. 2 while Poland (6-2; 6-3) got past Anthony Caputo at No. 4. For Lashkul, the victory evened his record to 12-12 on the year while Poland earned his 14th singles win of the year and 40th of his Seahawk career.
Sophomore
Hans Ohrner picked up a 6-4; 4-6; 6-4 triumph over Rodgers at No. 3, sealing the victory for the home team. Walters bested Lewis Edwards, 6-1; 6-3 at No. 1 action while senior
Charlton Boyd defeated Dylan Appel, 7-5; 6-4, in recording his program-leading 69th career singles victory.
The Seahawks are scheduled to play three matches over the weekend as they first travel for a doubleheader at Army West Point, taking on the Black Knights on April 7 at 9:00 a.m. before taking on Monmouth at 1:00 p.m.,
Wagner concludes the road trip on Sunday, April 8, with a Northeast Conference (NEC) tilt at Fairleigh Dickinson.
