West Windsor, NJ – In a season of firsts, the No. 2-seeded Wagner men's tennis team added more firsts, as the Seahawks will be competing for their first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) title on Sunday after defeating the No. 3 seed, Saint Francis U, 4-3, in a thrilling semifinals match on Saturday morning.
With the victory, Wagner improves to 14-8 on the year in extending its win streak to six straight while the Red Flash conclude its season with at 8-13. The Green & White will take on the top-seed, Bryant, on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
In singles action, senior
Charlton Boyd gave Wagner a 2-0 lead after defeating Eduardo Garcia, 6-1; 6-0 at No. 5 singles. For Boyd, the win gave the senior his 75th career singles victory and improves his season record to 27-3.
Saint Francis U rattled off three straight victories; in taking a 3-2 lead in the match. Pinos got the Red Flash on the board with a 6-1; 6-2 win over Poland at No. 4 play while Charles Morkel got past sophomore
Hans Ohrner, 6-1; 6-3 at No. 3 to even the match at 2-2.
At No .6, Sandy was able to win the first set, 6-2 but was outlasted by Suntar, 6-3; 6-3 as Saint Francis U was one win away from going back to the NEC Championship for the third straight season.
At No. 1, Walters and Luna were pitted in a three-set, thriller went in favor of the Seahawks. Walters dropped the first set, 1-6, but rallied to tie the match at 3-3 after winning the next two sets by a 6-2; 6-3 count, setting up the winner-take-all match at No. 2
With a trip to the NEC title match against Bryant on the line, Lashkul outlasted Foo-Kune in the first set, 7-6 (7-4). Foo-Kune edged out the third-year Seahawk, 6-4, in the second set, which set up the third and final set for a trip to the finals.
After a hard-fought match, it was Lashkul that sealed the match for Wagner, by a 6-3 score, that punched the Seahawks' first-ever trip to the NEC Championship game.
The Seahawks secured the first point in the match, taking the doubles points with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The junior tandem of
Anatoliy Lashkul and
Dale Sandy earned a 6-2 victory over Alec Dylan Foo-Kune and Jan Vit Suntar, 6-2 at No.1.
Sophomore
Dylan Walters and junior
Eric Poland picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 2 play, besting Franz Luna and Sebastian Pinos to put Wagner ahead in the match.
