West Windsor, NJ – The 2017-18 season for the Wagner men's tennis team came to an end on Sunday morning as the No. 2-seeded Seahawks fell to the top-seed, Bryant, 4-0, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) championship match on Sunday as the Bulldogs claim their fifth consecutive league title.
Wagner, who were competing in the first NEC title match in program history, conclude the season with a 14-9 overall record. The Seahawks also produced the first-ever undefeated conference season, going 5-0 in league matches this year.
Bryant will represent the conference at the NCAA Championships, as the Bulldogs stand at 14-15 overall.
At the conclusion of the match, the NEC announced the first-ever All-Tournament team. Representing the Seahawks were a pair of seniors in team captain
Charlton Boyd and classmate
Allen Wang. Luke Lorenz of the Bulldogs became the first-ever NEC Tournament MVP to headline three total picks for Bryant. Joining Lorenz was Matt Kuhar and Jorge Ortiz Garcia. Also named to the All-Tourney team were Fairleigh Dickinson's Maciej Autuch and Sebastian Pinos of Saint Francis U.
In today's championship match vs. Wagner, Bryant took No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the first point in the overall match before going on to rattle off wins at No. 3, 2 and 6 to clinch the title.
The Seahawks were competitive in each contest. Sophomore
Hans Ohrner fell to Artur Jakubowski, 6-3; 6-3 at No. 3 while junior
Anatoliy Lashkul nearly edged Lorenz at No. 2, before dropping a 6-4; 6-4 decision. Classmate
Dale Sandy dropped the first set, 7-5, but fought back valiantly before Wilson Dong closed the match out with a 6-3 winner.
Today's championship marked the end of the stellar Seahawk careers of Boyd and Wang, a duo that helped lead the program to a school-record 51-combined wins over a four-year span. Individually, Boyd and Wang have left their mark on the program for years, and seasons, to come.
The Shreveport, LA native Boyd racked up a record of 75-24 over his four-year Seahawk career. The 75 singles victories are the most in program history. This year, he became the first-ever Wagner men's tennis player to post 20 or more victories as he concluded his senior campaign with a 27-3 overall record. Additionally, he holds three of the top-five single-season win totals, as he recorded 18 wins back in 2014-15 and 16 in 2015-16.
As a doubles player, Boyd has set the bar high as well, racking up 65 doubles victories over his tenure. He and Wang finished their doubles career with a 12-2 record, which includes this season's "B" doubles crown at the Hofstra University Invitational.
Boyd accumulated 51 of his 75 wins out of the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively, going 51-15 over those three spots. This season, Boyd became just the second Seahawk to be ranked by the Oracle/International Tennis Association (ITA) back on November 17, as he was the No. 104-ranked tennis player in the country out of 125 Division I tennis players.
A two-time NEC Player of the Month/Week selection, and a 2015-16 All-NEC Second Team selection, Boyd was also a three-time NEC Spring Academic and Commissioner's Honor Roll choice. The various academic accolades he has earned include:
Wang, who arrived on Grymes Hill from Clovis, CA, amassed 35 singles, wins while racking up 32 doubles victories, good for seventh all-time. Wang earned back-to-back titles at the Hofstra University Invitational, as this season, the veteran Seahawk captured the "C" consolation and "B" doubles crown with Boyd.
The former Buchanan High School standout earned 11 doubles victories this season, ten of which coming in tournament style play. In 2015-16, he earned a career-high 11 singles wins, seven of which coming out of the Flight No. 5 position.
The 2018-19 Seahawks will be veteran group, as they are expected to return four seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. The 2019 senior class will be comprised of
Ilya Kneppelhout,
Anatoliy Lashkul,
Eric Poland and
Dale Sandy.
