Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team edged out the Saint Francis U Red Flash, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 7-6 overall and remain unbeaten in Northeast Conference (NEC) play at 2-0 while the Red Flash fall to 5-10 overall and suffered their first league contest loss and now stand at 3-1.
Since 2004, today's victory marked the first-ever win for Wagner against Saint Francis U in dual match play, as the Seahawks were winless in the previous eleven meetings.
The Red Flash took two of three doubles matches in securing the first overall point of the contest. The Green & White managed to earn a victory at No. 2 doubles action as the pairing of sophomore
Dylan Walters and junior
Eric Poland earned a 6-2 win over Charles Morkel and Eduardo Garcia.
With the win, Walters and Poland improve to 10-6 overall, while running their record to 7-3 out of the No. 2 position. The Seahawk pairing have now won their last six matches.
Wagner tied the match at 1-1 as in singles action, Walters earned a 6-4; 6-3 win at No. 1 as the second-year Seahawk earned his 13th singles victory of the season and 22nd of his Wagner career. SFU went ahead by one after Alec Dylan Foo-Kune outlasted
Anatoliy Lashkul, 4-6; 6-4; 6-3 at No. 2 play.
Hans Ohrner knotted the match up at 2-2 as he bested Morkel, 6-0; 6-4, at No. 3. With the triumph, Ohrner moved to 12-10 on the season, while picking up his 27th career victory in the process. At No. 4, Sebastian Pinos defeated Poland, 6-3, 6-2 as the visitors went back up, 3-2.
Wagner sealed the match with back-to-back wins at No. 5 & No. 6 play, respectively.
Ilya Kneppelhout was victorious at No. 5 with a 6-3; 7-6 (7-3) win over Samuel Miller to run his season record to 9-8 and picked up his 32nd win.
Senior
Charlton Boyd recorded career singles win No. 68 while becoming the first Seahawk (since stats have been kept by the NEC in 2004) to record 20 wins in a single-season, after defeating Jan Vit Suntar, 6-3; 2-6; 6-0 at No. 6 play. Additionally for Boyd, he currently has the highest single-season winning percentage at .870 based on his 20-3 mark this season. The Shreveport, LA native improved to 10-1 at No. 6 action while moving his career total to 19-5.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, April 4, as the Seahawks are set to square off against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Fairfield, at the Wagner Tennis Courts. The match is set for 2:00 p.m.
