Brooklyn, NY – In the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, the Wagner baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak end, dropping the series finale to Bryant, 3-1, at MCU Park.
With the loss, the Seahawks now stand at 12-9 overall and 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while Bryant improves to 8-12 on the season and earns its first conference win of the year.
Junior southpaw
Koby Bishop (2-1) suffered his first career loss after throwing five innings of three-hit ball, while giving up all three runs. Fellow left-hander
Keaton Freire and freshman right-hander
Nick LePre combined to finish the game throwing four scoreless frames, without allowing a hit. Freire walked two and struck out two batters in his three innings of work.
Junior 1B
Phil Capra contributed two of Wagner's four hits, while driving in the only run of the contest for the Green & White. Seniors
Nick Mascelli and
Sean Mazzio each went 1-for-4 with Mascelli scoring the lone run.
Bryant's Ryan Ward led off the game with a solo home run to right field. The Bulldogs added a second run in the top of the second as Tyler Panno grounded out to second base, which allowed Gaby Cruz to score from third.
The Green & White cut into the deficit as Mascelli sent a one-out double down the right field line and was brought home a batter later as Capra singled to center field, trimming the Bryant lead to 2-1.
Following a scoreless fourth, Bryant added an insurance run in the top of the fifth in taking a two-run lead at 3-1. Sam Owens led off the frame with a first-pitch triple to right field and scored when Capra bobbled the grounder at first base. Bishop was able to escape the big inning thanks to a 6-4-3 double play and a fly out to center.
Over the final five frames, Wagner was held hitless, as Craig Lacey and Nathan Wrighter were able to shut the door on a potential comeback attempt. Bryant's starter, Vito Morgese (2-1) earned the win after throwing seven innings of four-hit ball, giving up the lone run while striking out six Seahawks. Lacey and Wrighter combined for three strikeouts with Wrighter earning his second save of the season.
Wagner is scheduled to play Big East member St. John's on Tuesday, March 27.
