Brooklyn, NY – Three early runs combined with a stellar outing from junior southpaw Neil Abbatiello helped the Wagner baseball team earn a 3-2 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at MCU Park against Bryant.

With the win, Wagner improved to 12-8 on the season and 2-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Bulldogs fell to 7-12 on the year and 0-2 in league tilts. Additionally, the Seahawks became the first team since Sacred Heart in 2013 to win a league series against the Bulldogs while extending their win streak to nine straight, the longest under head coach Jim Carone.

Senior LF Anthony Godino was one of six Seahawks to post a hit in the contest, including what turned out to be a game changer as his first inning two-run double got the scoring going for Wagner. Sophomore designated hitter Freddy Sabido sent a RBI grounder to second base for the third run of the inning.

Abbatiello was masterful on the hill in the twinbill opener, earning his third victory of the season (3-0). The Dobbs Ferry, NY native allowed a fifth-inning two-out double to Ryan Ward while walking four batters and striking out four while allowing just two earned runs. The third-year left-hander retired 14 of the first 18 batters he faced before allowing the fifth inning hit.

Senior left-hander Brad Currao came on in relief of Abbatiello, working two scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one. Sophomore right-hander Nick Robino worked a scoreless ninth in earning his second save of the season and third of his career.

Bryant was able to cut the deficit in the seventh inning, scoring twice without recording a hit. An errant pitch hit Nick Angelini while Gaby Cruz and Dante Ricciardi drew walks in loading the bases with no outs. Sam Owens and Ryan Ward sent back-to-back sacrifice flies to right and left, respectively. Currao was able to record the final out on a pop fly to center, stranding Ricciardi at second base.

Robino came on in the ninth for Currao and gave up a leadoff single to Angelini. Bryant's Gaby Cruz moved Angelini into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt but Robino was able to retire the final two batters in sealing Wagner's win.

The Bulldogs' Steve Theetge took the loss (0-6), after lasting 6.1 innings while giving up all three runs and striking out five batter despite issuing four walks. Justin Snyder hurled the final 1.2 innings, not allowing a run or a hit.
