Men's Tennis Picks Up First Conference Win Of The Year; Defeats St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-2, On Saturday

Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team earned its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory under first-year head coach, Shem Filipek, by defeating local conference rival, St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-2, at the McCarren Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 6-5 on the year and 1-0 in NEC play while the Terriers fall to 3-10 and 0-3 in league tilts.
 
Wagner went on to capture the first point of Saturday's contest by taking two of three doubles matches. The duo of junior Eric Poland and sophomore Dylan Walters bested Javier Navarro and Pablo Blasco-Torres, 6-1 in No. 2 play.
 
Junior Ilya Kneppelhout and senior Charlton Boyd were able to get by the Terrier combination of Guillermo Artiz/Daniel Blasco, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles play.
 
St. Francis Brooklyn picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 as Francisco Blanco and Alejandro Ridruejo outlasted Anatoliy Lashkul and Dale Sandy, 6-3.
 
In singles action, SFBK tied up the match as Ridruejo defeated Walters, 6-4; 6-4 at No. 1. Wagner regained a 2-1 lead as Lashkul was defeated Navarro, 6-2; 6-2 at No. 2. For Lashkul, the win marked singles victory No. 25 for the junior, as he is now the seventh member of the team to record at least 25 wins for his career.
 
Ohrner's 6-3; 6-3 victory over Blanco at No. 3 put the visitors ahead 3-1 in the overall match. The Terriers showed some fight as Artiz edged out Poland, 6-4; 6-4, at No. 4 to cut Wagner's lead to one at 3-2.
 
The Seahawks took the remaining two matches in sealing the 5-2 triumph. Boyd, who moved up to No. 5 play this afternoon, earned a 6-2; 6-1 victory as the senior notched his program-leading 66th career win and improves to 12-5 all-time in No. 5 action.  Kneppelhout sealed the Wagner win with a 6-2; 6-1 triumph over D. Blasco for his 31st single win.
 
After being on the road for eight straight matches, the Seahawks embark on a four-match homestand, beginning on Thursday, March 29, as NEC-play continues with Wagner hosting the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at the Wagner Tennis Courts. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
