Merion Station, PA – The Wagner baseball team's bats were again on display as the Seahawks earned an 11-1 victory over the Saint Joseph's University Hawks on Friday at cold and windy Smithson Field.
With the victory, the Green & White even their record at 8-8 while the Hawks, of the Atlantic 10 Conference, fall to 6-8 on the season.
Four Seahawks had multi-hit performances in this afternoon's ten-run win, with senior CF
Anthony Godino leading the way, going 3-for-4 with a team-best four RBIs and with two runs scored. Senior 2B
Nick Mascelli, along with juniors
Will Johnson and
Anthony Pecora, supplied two hits apiece with Pecora delivering two RBIs while Johnson knocked in one.
On the hill, junior
Eric Ligda earned his third win of the season (3-1), scattering four hits and giving up just one earned run in in tossing a crisp 6.1-innings outing. The right hander set a career high with seven strikeouts, though had some command issues, allowing a season-high five walks. Senior LHP
Brad Currao fired the final 2.2 innings, not allowing a run or a hit while striking out two and walking one.
Saint Joseph's 1B Brian Markoski led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2, scoring the Hawks' lone run of the contest. 3B Marc Giacalone drove in the lone RBI for the home team. Brian Edgington (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) in lasting just three innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out two.
After two scoreless frames, the Seahawks struck for five runs in the third, sending nine men to the plate in the process. Mascelli singled up the middle to kick off the inning and promptly stole second. The senior infielder moved up to third following a passed ball and came in to score the game's first run on junior
Phil Capra's team-leading 22nd RBI.
Following back-to-back hits from Godino and Johnson, senior RF
Kyle Cala drew a bases loaded walk, which brought in Capra for the second run of the inning. Sophomore 1B
Tyler Sanfillippo then sent a sacrifice fly to center as Godino tagged up from third and plated the third run of the inning. Following a steal of second by Cala, Pecora sent a two-run single through the left side, scoring both Cala and Johnson, extending the Wagner lead to 5-0.
The Seahawks added three more in the top of the fourth in increasing their lead to 8-0. Mascelli started the inning with a single to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. A walk to senior SS
Sean Mazzio gave the Seahawks runners on first and second with no one out before Capra bounced into 6-4-3 double play, allowing Mascelli to move to third.
Godino then sent a towering shot that one-hopped over the left field wall as Mascelli scored and Godino trotted into second with a ground-rule double. Johnson added a single through the right side, bringing in Godino to make it 7-0. The final run of the inning came when Johnson scored on a wild pitch.
Saint Joseph's got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Giacalone grounded out to short, driving in Markoski, who had reached base on a walk, with what would prove to be SHU's lone run of the contest.
The Green & White concluded the scoring with three more in the top of the eighth as Godino cleared the bases with a double to left center field.
The Seahawks now head to Philadelphia, PA to take on the another A-10 foe in the LaSalle University Explorers on Saturday, March 17 at DeVincent Field. First pitch between Wagner and LaSalle is set for 2:00 p.m. LHP
Neil Abbatiello (1-0) is scheduled to climb the hill for the Seahawks while the Explorers are planning to throw Colin Kennedy (0-2)
