Raleigh, NC – The Wagner College softball team earned its first victory of the season and first win under new head coach
Lindsey Ubrun in an 11-0 offensive outburst over Delaware State University, before falling to NC State by a score of 8-0 in the second game of the afternoon on Day 2 of the Homewood Suites Invitational, hosted by NC State.
"It was great to get our first win of the season," said Ubrun. "That was the most complete game we've played yet, finally putting together pitching, defense, and hitting."
With the split, the Seahawks improve to 1-3 on the season and will face Delaware State in the final game of invitational, with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 am.
Game 1: Wagner 11, Delaware State 0 (5 innings)
Wagner used two big innings and let the defense do the rest, as the Seahawks blanked the Hornets 11-0.
Following a solid performance on Friday night, freshman
Arielle Koerber allowed just one hit in three innings of work, combining with junior
Ciera Luna for a three-hit shutout and earning the first victory of her young collegiate career.
Wagner got on the board in the second inning, as an RBI single by junior
Jessica Carlucci scored senior
Maite Reece to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead.
The high-scoring inning continued with an RBI pop-up by sophomore
Kyleigh Norris, back-to-back RBI doubles by junior
Karen Prihoda and sophomore
Zoe Bender, as well as an unearned run on a fielding error that allowed sophomore
Kaila Smith to reach base, scoring Bender in the process, giving Wagner a 5-0 lead.
The Seahawks tacked on six more runs in the third, as Prihoda and Bender hit back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded, with junior
Lauren Serrato working a walk to bring in another run. A sacrifice fly by Smith and a two-run double by Reece closed out the inning in grand fashion, extending the Seahawk lead to 11-0.
With Koerber and Luna dealing, the Seahawks cruised to the finish line in earning their first victory of the season after five innings.
Game 2: NC State 8, Wagner 0 (5 innings)
The Seahawks fell behind early in their second contest of the afternoon, as the Wolfpack scored four runs in the first inning.
Wagner's best scoring opportunity came in the second, but the Green and White was unable to capitalize on a walk to senior
Stefanie Aplin.
NC State scored three more runs in the third and one in the fifth, as Alexandra Kama and Brittany Nimmo combined for a no-hitter in the circle.
Senior
Morgan Brown suffered her second loss of the young season after throwing three innings, with Luna coming on once again in relief, tossing 1.2 innings.
