Bel Air, MD – Trailing 2-1 heading into the final inning of game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Wagner baseball team plated across the tying and eventual winning runs as the Seahawks defeated the Coppin State University Eagles, 3-2, at Harford Community College Stadium.
With the win, the Seahawks even their overall record to 2-2 while Coppin State falls to 1-2-1 on the season.
Junior LHP
Neil Abbatiello turned in another strong outing, tossing five innings while scattering five hits, allowing just one earned run, issuing two walks and matching his career-best seven strikeouts, despite not factoring in the decision. Sophomore RHP
Nick Robino came on in relief, allowing just an unearned run and a hit while walking four and fanning six Eagles in earning his second win of the season (2-0).
At the plate, junior 1B
Will Johnson and senior RF
Kyle Cala each had two hits while Johnson, CF
Joe Silvestrone and newcomer
Tyler Sanfillippo had one RBI each, with Sanfillippo's sacrifice fly proving to be the game winner.
CSU's Quinn Gleed went six innings, giving up three hits and one earned run before being relieved by Jahmon Taylor, who took the loss (1-1), in working two innings, surrendering four hits, two runs, walking three and striking out five. Branden Redfern worked a scoreless ninth, not allowing a hit and striking out one.
Caleb Duhay and Marcos Castillo each had two base hits for Coppin State while Nazier McILwain was credited with the lone RBI for the Eagles as he finished 1-for-5 in game one.
Wagner got on the board first in the top of the second. Following a lead-off single through the right side off the bat of sophomore DH
Freddy Sabido, junior catcher
Phil Capra moved Sabido into scoring position on a groundout. The lefty-swinging Johnson stepped up to the plate and singled back up-the-middle as Sabido came around for the first tally of the contest.
Coppin State evened the score at 1-1 in its half of the third as Devyan Dyal led off the stanza with a walk and moved to second after Duhay was thrown out at first trying to beat the throw from third. After Abbatiello set down Corey Treyes, McIlwain was able to find space through the right side of the infield, poking a base hit that scored Dyal.
Robino entered for Abbatiello to start the Coppin State's sixth. The Eagles got the leadoff man, Erik Crossman, aboard on a walk and he was promptly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Castillo. A. Saar pinch-hit for Palmer Powis and walked, giving the Eagles runners at first and second. CSU went to the bench again in the form of Brett Helmbrecht, who was set down on strikes. Dyal drew a two-out walk, loading the bases and Crossman was able to score on a passed ball. Duhay ended the inning by looking at strike three.
With Wagner trailing 2-1 and down to its final three outs. Capra kicked-started the rally with a single and was lifted for a pinch-runner in sophomore
Eric Lauk. Johsnon worked a walk, giving Wagner two runners aboard. The next hitter, Cala, saw a pitch to his liking and pulled it through the left side, loading the bases.
Coppin State then went to the pen, bringing in Redfern for Taylor. Silvestrone reached on a fielder's choice as Cala was out at second and Lauk scored the tying run. Wagner bench boss,
Jim Carone, elected for a pinch-hitter in Sanfillippo, who sent a towering fly to center that was snagged by Castillo, but, allowed Johnson to tag-up and score on the play.
Robino closed the door in the bottom of the frame as he got Duhay to fly out to Cala in right, Treyes to ground out to second, before striking out McIlwain to end the ball game.
