Bel Air, MD – The Wagner baseball team scored three runs in the third and three more in the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep, blanking Coppin State, 9-0, in game two of Saturday's twinbill.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-2 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-3-1 on the year.
Junior RHP
Eric Ligda went the distance for his first victory as a member of the Seahawks, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out six batters in his second start of the season. Junior catcher
Phil Capra provided much of the offensive spark for the visitors, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, scoring two runs and driving in six RBIs in the victory. Senior 2B
Nick Mascelli and junior CF
Joe Silvestrone each added an RBI in the contest.
Nazier McIlwain and Drew Thomas were the only two players to record a hit in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. CSU's starter, Aaron Rea, took the loss (0-2), going four innings, giving up five earned runs over five hits while walking two and striking out four.
After both teams were held scoreless through two, the Seahawks got on the board in their half of the third inning. Silvestrone reached on an infield single to third and stole second. Senior LF
Anthony Godino drew a two-out walk, giving the Seahawks runners on first and second. On the first pitch that Capra saw, he lofted a shot that sailed high over the right field for his first home run of the season and giving Wagner a 3-0 lead.
The Green & White added two more in the top of the fourth. Senior SS
Sean Mazzio led off with a single back-up-the-middle and sophomore 1B
Tyler Sanfillippo drew a four-pitch walk, giving the Seahawks two on with no outs. With now one out in the frame, Silvestrone sent a deep fly to left that was corralled by Thomas, but Mazzio was able to tag from third scoring the fourth run of the game. Mascelli then doubled to the deepest part of left center field, scoring Sanfillippo as Wagner increased the lead to 5-0.
Following a run in the sixth, the Seahawks sealed the victory in a similar fashion to how they started the contest. Sophomore DH
Freddy Sabido walked to start the seventh. Godino then beat out an infield single down the third base line, giving Wagner runners on first and second. Coincidentally enough, on the first pitch that Capra saw from Corey Treyes, he got all of it as the ball cleared the center field wall giving Wagner a 9-0 lead.
Ligda, who retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced, started the final inning with a pair of strikeouts before getting Marcos Castillo to ground out ending the ballgame.
The Seahawks are scheduled to travel to Piscataway, NJ to tangle with Big Ten members, Rutgers, on Tuesday, February 27. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Bainton Field.
