Flushing, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 at Queens College on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks drop to 4-3 on the season while the Knights improve to 3-0 on the season.
Queens College earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 as the tandem of Lucas Martinez/Gabriel Mendez edged out junior
Eric Poland and sophomore
Dylan Walters. The Seahawks evened doubles play at No. 1, as juniors
Anatoliy Lashkul and
Dale Sandy were victorious over Roman Laga/Stanislas Bedrune, 8-6.
In the deciding No. 3 match, the Seahawks had junior
Ilya Kneppelhout and senior
Charlton Boyd pitted against Richard Sec/Cosme Jubera. In a see-saw contest, both teams were resilient trading points before Sec/Jubera were able to outlast Kneppelhout/Boyd, 8-7 (7-4), giving Queens a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
The Knights went ahead 3-0 in the overall match after Laga bested Sandy at No. 3 action, 6-3; 6-1 and Hugo de Andrade defeated Kneppelhout, 6-2; 6-1 in No. 4 play. Wagner got on the board as Boyd withstood a valiant effort from SEC, earning a 7-5; 7-5 victory. The match was clinched at No. 1 play, as Mendez defeated Lashkul, 6-2; 7-6 (7-4).
Despite the loss, Wagner finished out strong, as Walters earned a 6-3; 7-6 (10-4) triumph over Jubera while Poland was able to comeback after dropping the first set, 3-6, in posting a 6-4; 7-6 winner over Lucas Martinez.
The Green & White return to the courts in a couple of weeks as they open the month of March with a road trip as they are scheduled to play Temple at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The match is slated to start at 9:00 a.m.
