Staten Island, NY (Dec. 31, 2018) - Wagner College is mourning the death of
Tyamonee Johnson. A native of Fort Washington, MD, Johnson earned his undergraduate degree in May, 2018 and competed as a fifth-year member of the football team this past fall as a graduate student while pursuing an MBA.
Dr. Richard Guarasci - Wagner College President
"In this day of grief for the Johnson family, the Wagner campus community has a broken heart. We have lost a bright light but Tyamonee will always be part of our family."
Walt Hameline, Athletic Director
"We are all deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of Tyamonee Johnson. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on supporting his family, friends and teammates during this most difficult time."
Jason Houghtaling, Head Football Coach
"This has obviously been an extremely difficult day for everyone associated with our football program and Wagner College as a whole. Above all, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the Johnson family. I feel inadequate right now as far as finding the right words to describe Tyamonee and his incredible spirit. 'T' had a way of making everyone feel better, no matter the situation. I will be forever grateful for all the lessons he taught me and so many others."
A 5-11, 170-pound defensive back, Johnson was a member of the Wagner football team from 2014-2018, competing for four seasons as a Seahawk after redshirting his freshman year. He finished eighth on the 2018 team with 30 tackles, and, for his career, the former standout at the Bullis School in Potomac, MD, finished with 85 tackles, including 58 solo stops. During his Seahawk career, he also had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Wagner College is grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support as our campus community mourns this tragic loss.
