Bronx, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team (17-13) edged Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Tournament on Friday with a final score of 9-7 and will now face No. 2 seed George Washington on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
Sophomore lefty
Jack Leighton opened the game by winning the first sprint for the Green & White. Sophomore driver
Jasmin Kolasinac started the Seahawks off with a 1-0 tally off the first possession of the game.
Leighton dished a pass to junior driver
Matthew Miller who notched the second goal for Wagner, making it a 2-0 game. The Blue Jays answered, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity in cutting the Seahawk lead to one.
Senior driver
Teo Dadic found the back of the net to begin the second period. Miller reciprocated the assist to Leighton before Hopkins answered with a goal of its own with the score set at 4-3.
Dadic registered his second goal of the game on a man up advantage moments before Kolasinac scored his second tally of the night.
To begin the third period, the Blue Jays notched another goal, drawing within 6-4. Following a pair of key saves made by senior goalie
Cameron Woldt, Kolasinac secured a hat trick in recording his third goal of the game before the end of the third stanza.
Leighton kicked off the final eight minutes of play winning his fourth sprint of the game. Kolasinac and Miller put the finishing touches on the game with their fourth and second goals, respectively.
Hopkins netted three goals, but it would not be enough to defeat the Seahawks who emerged victorious with a final score of 9-7.
Following the conclusion of the game, Woldt was named the player of the game after recording 10 saves.
Prior to the Wagner-Johns Hopkins game, George Washington defeated McKendree by a count of 16-6.
