Bronx, NY – The third-seeded Wagner College men's water polo team begins play in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship on Friday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. against No. 6 Johns Hopkins. Held at the campus of the Fordham Rams, the Green & White will be joined by the remaining five members of the MAWPC East Region as well as McKendree from the West Region.
Soaring Seahawks
Last time out, the Green & White handed George Washington its first home loss of the 2018 campaign on November 4, concluding the regular season on a high note and snapping the Colonials four game win-streak. Sophomore driver
Jasmin Kolasinac found the back of the net seven times, leading the Seahawks to an 18-16 victory over GW.
Scouting the Johns Hopkins
The Blue Jays ended the regular season with a 2-10 record in MAWPC play. Their two conference victories came against La Salle on September 2 and 29, as they defeated the Explorers 21-4 and 24-15, respectively.
Tournament Seeding
After accumulating a 8-4 conference record, Wagner enters the eight-team tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Seahawks fell four times in league play to Bucknell (2), Fordham (1) and Navy (1).
Bucknell University will be the No. 1-seeded team after claiming the MAWPC regular season title with an 11-1 record. George Washington University earned the No. 2 seed, finishing 9-3. Host Fordham will compete as the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Johns Hopkins will compete as the No. 6 seed while MAWPC West Region member McKendree is No. 7 and La Salle will round out the field as the No. 8 seed.
Tournament Schedule
The Green & White will play a total of three games throughout the tournament. If the Seahawks defeat Johns Hopkins, they will play the winner of Game 3 between No. 2 George Washington University and No.7 McKendree University at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17. However, if the Seahawks lose to the Blue Jays, they will face the loser of Game 3 at 3:00 p.m on Saturday. Sunday's championship game will take place at 1:30 p.m between the two remaining victors on Friday and Saturday.
NCAA Tournament at Stake
The Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference tournament champion earns an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Water Polo Championship held at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University from December 1-2. The MAWPC is one of five men's water polo conferences competing this weekend with an automatic berth at stake. In addition, two at-large bids will be up for the taking to complete the seven team field.
