Farmville, VA – Behind six players scoring in double figures, the Wagner College women's basketball team secured its first win of the 2018-19 season on Wednesday morning, defeating the Longwood University Lancers, 86-60, at Willett Hall.

This marks the first time since February 24, 2018 that at least four Seahawks have scored in double figures, when Wagner accomplished the feat at home against Mount St. Mary's (Sierra Clark, 14 | Tanasia Russell, 16 | Khaleah Edwards, 12 | Morgan Lenahan, 15).

The last time Wagner had five players score in double digits was back on February 4, 2017 in a 74-66 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson  (Julia McClure, 15 | Tanasia Russell, 13 | Corinn Baggs, 10 | Kerstie Phills, 18 | Kellie Crouch 13).

Redshirt sophomore Taylah Simmons, who made her season debut in today's contest, along with freshman forward Emilija Krista Grava, each scored a team-best 18 points. In addition, Krista Grava recorded her first career double-double, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Khaleah Edwards tallied 12 points while Alayshia Dailey and Janelle Mullen each scored 11. Dailey led the Seahawks with six assists and two steals in her 28 minutes of action. Senior Nakylia Carter was the sixth member in double figures, ending the contest with 10 points in 30 minutes.

Longwood was led by Mallory Odell, who tallied a team-high 11 points in 35 minutes of play. Stephanie Guihon and Dayne Rouse each netted nine points on a combined 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.

Wagner raced out to an early 10-0 lead, as Edwards converted on a pair of three-pointers while Dailey was able to muscle in two off a layup chance. Longwood got on the board at the 5:45 mark of the first period on a Kristina Antonenko layup followed by a Ciarah Bennett layup.

The visitors embarked on an 18-5 run over a five-minute stretch in upping its lead to 28-9. Simmons dialed up a trifecta from the top of the key that started this Wagner outburst and the run was capped by a three-pointer from Krista Grava. Bennett scored the final basket of the stanza for Longwood, who trailed, 28-11.  In the quarter, Wagner shot 66.7 percent from the field (10-of-15) while hitting on 6-of-7 from beyond-the-arc in the opening period.

In the second quarter, Mullen opened the scoring for the Seahawks with a three-pointer off a feed from Simmons. Longwood clawed its way back on the heels of a 14-8 run over a 5:19 span, which brought them to within 39-26. Wagner scored six of the final ten points, heading into the break with a 45-30 advantage.

For the first half of play, the Seahawks converted on 60.0 percent shooting from floor and 70.0 percent from three-point range, hitting on 7-of-10 from the outside. The Green & White limited the Lancers to 48.0 percent shooting from the field, while holding Longwood without a three-pointer in four chances.

The visiting Seahawks continued their scoring prowess when play resumed for the third quarter as Wagner outscored Longwood, 24-10, with Dailey and Simmons combining for 12 of the 24 points. Krista Grava anchored Wagner on the boards in the quarter, collecting eight of the 20 caroms in the frame as the Seahawks out-muscled Longwood, 20-6, in the frame. Wagner held its largest lead of the contest, 69-38, after Dailey was able to spot Krista Grava cutting to the basket for two.

The Seahawks concluded the contest by outscoring the Lancers, 24-10, in the final period, shooting 47.6 percent from the field while limiting the home team to just four made buckets (4-of-17). For the game, Wagner's tenacious defensive effort paid dividends for the road team, holding Longwood to just 41.3 percent from the field and without a three-pointer in the contest as the Lancers went 0-for-14 from deep.

Wagner returns to Staten Island for its home opener on Saturday, November 17 when the Seahawks welcome Patriot League members, Lafayette, to the Spiro Sports Center. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. as Keith Raad will have the call courtside on NEC Front Row.
