Colts Neck, NJ - In the final race before the Wagner College men's cross country team gears up for the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship next week, the Seahawks competed at the Monmouth University Tune Up, taking home first-place honors.
For the Green & White, this marks the second consecutive week in which the team has secured top honors, after taking first at the
NJIT Highlander XC Challenge back on October 6.
Wagner posted a total time of 1:19:39.05, which edged out the host, Monmouth, who finished second at 1:20:17.23. Conference rival,
Fairleigh Dickinson, placed third with a total time of 1:27.52.92, while Saint Peter's concluded the race in fourth at 1:41:22.10.
The Seahawks had four runners place among the top-ten in the NCAA D1 5K. Three-time NEC Rookie of the Week honoree, freshman
Trausti Thorsteins crossed the finish line first with a time of 15:27.56. Teammate Jonathan
Besselink clocked in with a time of 15:27.81 in concluding the race in second. Newcomer William
Cuthbertson rounded out the top-five performances for Wagner, checking in with a time of 15:57.73.
Three
Seahawk harriers finished among the top-15 as freshman
Mahmoud Abdalla finished in
12th place with a time of 16:38.24 while fellow newcomer,
Sean Weir, finished
13th at 16:51.29. Rounding out the performances for Wagner was junior Alvin
Sime, who placed
15th with a time of 17:19.36.
The 2018 NEC Cross Country Championships is set to commence on October 27 in Smithfield, RI.
